“Jesus,” Kade whispered.

“Keep Eden out of here,” Gabriel growled.

“Definitely. Whoever it is, they aren’t here now,” Kade said.

Gabriel shuffled back toward the door to the apartment, where he found Eden sniffling in Talon’s arms. “Is it bad?” she asked in barely a whisper.

“Yes, Ladybug. It’s pretty bad. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Would you rather I take you back to the compound and then clean up this mess?”

She shook her head. “No. I want to get some of my things.”

“Okay.” He took her hand and led her into the apartment. He hadn’t been kidding. The place had been flipped. Every single piece of furniture was upside down. Every drawer had been emptied onto the floor. Whoever had come in here had even taken a knife to her bed and stabbed the mattress so many times that the bedroom was filled with fluff.

Eden gasped as silent tears rolled down her face. She yanked her hand free of Gabriel’s and wandered around, picking up things and righting them as if standing up a lamp or setting a plate on the counter would make a difference.

When she turned toward Gabriel, she said, “I keep replaying last night in my head, wondering if I could’ve handled things differently. I snapped when that guy pinched my ass. What if I hadn’t thrown the soda in his face? What if I’d laughed them off when they’d taunted me?”

Gabriel glanced over his shoulder to make sure no one else was listening. They had all made themselves scarce. They were in her bedroom. “And told them the color of your fucking pubic hair?” Gabriel hissed. He shook his head. “No, Ladybug. They were way the fuck out of line. You did nothing wrong.”

She swiped at tears, nearly breaking his heart. He didn’t like to see his Little girl so upset. Shoulders slumping, she passed him and headed for her bedroom.

Gabriel followed her to find the other men making piles of clothes and tucking stuffing from the mattress back into one of the slashes, probably to get it out of the way so they could see.

Eden gasped as she ran across the room. She grabbed something off the floor, pulled it to her chest, and sank to her knees. Sobs filled the room.

Gabriel rushed toward her, pushing things out of the way to get to his girl. He dropped onto his knees behind her and wrapped his arms around her. He couldn’t see what she was holding, but it was obviously important to her.

He held her and rocked gently while she cried, waiting for her to slow to sniffles before saying, “Can Daddy see?”

Her hands were shaking as she lowered them from her chest to reveal a stuffed ladybug. His head had been almost severed from his body. It was hanging on by a thread.

Gabriel’s heart hurt, and rage filled him at the same time. He fought to control that last emotion. “What’s his name?”

“Spot,” she sobbed. “Why would someone do this?”

“Because some people have so much ugliness inside them that all they know how to do is hurt others.
