Chapter 7: Spy Trap

“AS YOU say, general, it’s absurd to think that we would have the slightest chance of capturing this German spy by making a search of Paris and its surroundings.

“On the other hand, I believe there is a way of capturing him. Here is what I have in mind.

“Suppose we let it be known throughout Paris that there will be a special attraction put on at, say the Opera Comique. See that the news spreads that all dignitaries and high commanding officers will be there for this special feature. You will be there, general — so will Marshal Foch, Petain and Joffre and the rest.”

The general stared at him for a moment in astonishment.

“Good Heavens, man, do you know what you’re proposing? Why that would be inviting the wholesale murder of the highest officials in Paris.”

“ That’s exactly how I want it to appear,” G-8 nodded. “But what I’m going to tell you now is in strict secrecy. The members of our Intelligence, and there will be many of them in the plot, will know the plans. No one else.”

“But G-8!” the general exploded. “You’re asking for permission to do something that is ridiculous.

“Here, we know, is a German agent having in his possessions enough of these missiles to kill hundreds of people — probably thousands. One of those released in the Opera Comique would smother everybody in there!”

“That is exactly the idea,” G-8 said calmly. “We must make this very attractive so that we’ll be sure the German agent will be there with his Breath of Death, as the Germans call it. But we don’t intend to let it go so far as to cause death. That is to say, we hope it won’t.”

“But I couldn’t even permit you to take that chance,” the general objected.

“You will, I am sure, when you completely understand my plan,” G-8 said. “You see, general, you and the other dignitaries will not be there — I mean, not in person.”

“I’m afraid I don’t get it at all,” the general said, with a shake of his head and a puzzled frown.

“Just this,” G-8 went on. “Before tonight we can gather nearly three hundred Allied Intelligence officers here in Paris.

“For instance, we’ll select the one who has the figure and bearing most like you, then Battle will go to work on him. He’ll wear one of your own dress uniforms. He’ll be there in the box of honor and he’ll look and act exactly like you. The same will be true of Foch and all the other dignitaries.

“The box of honor at the Opera Comique, as I recall, holds about a dozen people. Then, throughout the audience, every third person will be a member of the Allied Intelligence. We have some very clever women in the service. They will be there too.

“Everyone, of course, will be disguised as some important official. The women will be disguised as the wives, perhaps. All this is to be kept secret, except that this great show is to be put on tonight at eight.
