Soon, Lexi pulled into the parking lot of the Texas Highway Patrol Regional Office in Bowie—the designated rally point. Four tactical vehicles with Texas DPS printed on the sides were lined up in the official section, signifying their Special Operations team had arrived.

She held open the glass door at the main entrance, and Noah stepped through, removing his wide-brimmed hat. A flash of their badges got them past reception and to the threshold of a conference room. A dozen officers dressed in tactical uniforms were seated at eight-foot-long tables, facing the front whiteboard. They were drinking coffee or an energy drink, two were scrolling through something on their phones, and the rest were engaged in conversation. Some were white, some were Black, some were Hispanic, one was Asian, and two were women. Still, they all had one thing in common—Texas Rangers Special Operations patches in the shape of the Lone Star State on their sleeves.

Lexi had been around every famous racecar driver on the circuit but never had she felt the slightest bit giddy to meet them. However, standing among the Texas Rangers SWAT unit was special. Growing up in Texas, she’d seen them in action twice and idolized their bravery and skill. Today, she was about to work with them as a contemporary. This would be a treat.

Lexi and Noah stepped inside, but then her childlike bubble burst. All conversation in the room stopped when the Rangers set eyes on Noah. Their stares lingered beyond the point of social graces and crossed uncomfortably into the territory of bigotry. How disappointing. She’d built it up in her head that the men and women of the Rangers were above the petty reactions she’d encountered with Noah everywhere except the Beebo. The Rangers weren’t superheroes. They were merely people.

“It’s called vitiligo, people. It’s not contagious.” Lexi’s voice dripped with disapproval. “Now, who’s in charge?”

One man standing with a coffee cup in his hand wagged his thumb toward a small glassed-in office to the side of the whiteboards. “In there.” Conversation in the room picked up again.

Lexi scanned the uniforms of the two people in the glassed-in area and spotted one person wearing a tactical uniform with lieutenant bars on the collar. To her surprise, that person was a tall, broad-shouldered Black woman with her dark hair pulled into a tight bun. So maybe the Rangers weren’t as entrenched in intolerance as she’d assumed.

Lexi elbowed Noah in the side and approached the lieutenant reviewing documents on a clipboard while talking to an officer with sergeant stripes. Everything about the woman screamed professional, from the crispness of her uniform to the shined boots to her perfect posture.

Lexi waited in the doorway until the lieutenant looked in her direction.

“You must be Special Agent Mills from the ATF.” She extended her right hand to Lexi. “I’m Sarah Briscoe. Glad you’re here. Your SRT commander said you’re his best explosives expert.”

“I’m glad to be here.” Lexi gestured toward Noah. “This is Detective Noah Black from the Nogales PD.
