Chapter 7

“I'm getting really tired of being knocked out and taken place,” Ava complained. The black bag over her head was stuffy, and quite honestly, she was somewhat concerned whether someone else had been the victim of the same black bag. Her hair was frizzy, and it surrounded her head like a halo. But her facial expression was anything but angelic.

Ava began wondering if these men had ever tested these black bags. She wasn’t about to tell them that even though her vision was somewhat obscured, she could still see everything. However, later on she concluded that they served more as a fear tactic. After all, they were planning to drag her off to some secluded area and kill her anyway.

She was in some part of the woods, in an area she didn’t know well judging by how unfamiliar the trees looked. As she observed the area around her, she nodded, taking in information and filing it away for later use.

The men who had grabbed her were nowhere to be seen. In their place, there was one person pacing slowly behind her. But Ava’s hands and feet were tightly bound, making it impossible for her to turn and identify this person. That didn’t help her anxiety at all — it was skyrocketing.

“Ava, Ava, Ava” a voice called out.

Oh. Him.

“Is this what you do as a spokesman? Threaten people on Veritas’s behalf?” Ava mocked.

The man stopped pacing around, and Ava held her breath, not sure on what to expect. She had seen the dead bodies caused by this group, and she knew not to push them too far.

“You tend to run your mouth Ms. Locke. Be careful that it doesn’t get you in trouble one day,” the man replied smoothly in his easy and plain tone. “I’m simply here to deliver one last warning. Please, stop with whatever you’re doing. It’s unsightly.”

Ava pulled a face. Why was he talking like some cartoon villain?

Now eager more than ever to leave, she struggled against her restraints but froze when she felt the man’s breath on the back of her neck. She couldn’t help but flinch as something cold pressed against her back and her arms. It was a blade — a knife of sorts — and it was sharp.

“I will let you go for now Ms. Locke. It seems like someone has taken an interest in you. However, consider this your last warning.”

The blade move down and cut off the ropes. Ava jerked forward and attempted to get up. Her knees wobbled, and she stumbled.

“Oh, and don’t turn around until I’m gone. It’s more polite that way.”

“Hey!” Ava yelled. She wasn’t going to waste this golden opportunity to get information. “Why are you doing all this?”

The only reply Ava received was a bark of laughter that only fueled her anger. Of course, there had only been a very slight chance that he’d give her a proper answer. He had to first believe that Ava wasn’t some sort of threat, but she found herself smiling.
