Chapter 3
It took a few days for Gretchen to approach Amabel without feeling a hint of fear. The worst of all was that the girl always seemed to know what she was thinking, and it made her feel bad. Then she would grow angry.
She couldnât help how she felt, and it was Amabelâs fault in a way. She was the one who intimidated her so, she was the one that had intimidated all of them, and where once Amabel was the most approachable of their roommates, now all of them looked askance at her.
It bothered the blonde, Gretchen could see it clear as day, but it still took her a while to get over it. When she gathered her courage, stepped closer to the blonde and smiled at her, Amabel smiled in reply, as bright as ever, perhaps even brighter, and Gretchen found herself coloring slightly in embarrassment, her heart pounding in her chest. Part of her understood why that was, but she tried to fool herself.
It was only her hunger, she would whisper under her breath. It had been a good while since she fed, and the signs she needed to were evident. Her reflexes were lacking, there was always a hunger that lingered in her stomach no matter how much she ate, and every single person she saw was becoming desirable. Even then, Amabel was more desirable than anyone else, but she tried to ignore the part of her that thought so.
Her hunger was affecting her more than she would ever want to admit, but she refused to feed. Not before making sure she would be safe in doing so. There were plenty of good looking men and women who she could try to seduce and enjoy for a night, feeding deeply from them, but she was afraid of how the headmistress would react, and what would happen should she be discovered.
Not that it ended up mattering in the end. âWhat?â Gretchen couldnât quite believe what she heard and asked Monique to repeat it.
The blue-haired girl was bothered and it showed, but she gathered herself and repeated her earlier words. âThe headmistress will be our mentor.â
Gretchen looked at her roommates, hoping that one of them would tell her it was a prank, but soon realized that wouldnât happen. âIs that normal?â She questioned, trying to appear nonchalant, but she was sure she wasnât fooling anyone. At least none of the others seemed very reassured by who would be their mentor.
She probably shouldnât worry about her roommates. They knew she wasnât human, and they didnât seem very bothered by it. No one at the school seemed to care about non-humans, at least vocally. Ciara seemed to be one of the few, but even then, mostly in Gretchenâs case, and only when no one else could hear her complain about the succubus.
She supposed that made sense, no matter how scared she had been about their reactions before. Those who dealt with magic would have to interact with creatures and monsters sooner or later, and any prejudices would make things awkward.
