Our train got into the main station in the city of Milan by ten in the morning. From there we switched to another line that brought us north of the city, where the expansive Polytechnic University of Milan was situated.
I kept my head on a swivel looking out for the man who had attacked us in our cabin, but I never got another look at him. At least not at this time. I did discover that Petra had not purchased the tickets with the cash I had given her. Instead, she had used her Visa. Now I knew how the attacker had found us on the train.
Petra knew this area of the city quite well, since she had taken her advanced degrees here. She found us a hotel a couple of blocks from the university. From there we would be able to walk to the venue holding our gig on Friday. But we werenât able to check into the hotel at that time, so we placed our small bags in a room behind the front desk.
What I didnât know until that moment was the fact that Petra had set up a meeting with the business development director, Lucrezia Caputo, at her office in a small building near the engineering department.
As we walked to that meeting, the clouds overhead threatened to pour rain upon us, but so far had held off.
âWhat should I know about this woman?â I asked Petra.
âWell, as I mentioned before, she seems to like men and women equally,â Petra said. âBut sheâs really attracted to intelligence.â
Great, I thought. That wasnât exactly my finest quality.
âMake sure she doesnât know we are sleeping together,â Petra said.
âCrap,â I said. âI planned to open with that.â
She shoved her elbow into my ribs. âYou know what I mean.â
âOkay. Any idea how we convince her to give up two percent of your company?â
Petra stopped me by grabbing my arm. âI thought you would know how to do this.â
I didnât want to mention the fact that I had done a complete background check on the woman while Petra slept on the train. Lucrezia Caputo was old school. Almost no social media presence. Her family had originally come from old money in Italy, which could have been from any of the northern Italian kingdoms raping and pillaging, but they had lost most of their fortunes during the fascist period prior to the Second World War. After that the family had advanced through education instead of business prowess.
The Polytechnic University of Milan wasnât like a normal university in America. It consisted of a smattering of buildings that more resembled office buildings than structures of higher learning.
Lucrezia Caputoâs office was on the second floor of the mechanical engineering department.
Petra spoke with the receptionist in Italian, and the young lady escorted us into the development directorâs office.
I had seen a number of photos online of Lucrezia, but seeing her in person was much more intriguing. She got up from behind her large desk and greeted us in the middle of the room with double kisses and near hugs.
