First Response Team
But you have a church to run, right? So how in the world can you be expected to do such extensive follow-up on your guests? As God blesses you with thirty or more first-time guests each week, you certainly can’t do it all on your own, and your staff is stretched to the limit as it is, I know. That’s where the First Response Team comes in.
The First Response Team is a group of volunteers who meet every Monday afternoon to help with all of the follow-up correspondence. Just let your members and regular attenders know they can swing by on Monday afternoons as they are free or on their way home from work to help you handwrite notes and take care of all the work that goes into following up with that week’s guests. In the beginning, you and your staff may be able to handle it, but eventually as your evangelism outreach grows and God sends you more guests, don’t hesitate to enlist the help of a few eager servers. A strong First Response Team—one capable of handling all of the details—is crucial to the development of a dynamic follow-up strategy that will resonate with your first-time guests in a positive way.
Remember: everything speaks to your guests, and they don’t stop listening when the service ends. While they may or may not be expecting correspondence from you, they will certainly be highly attuned to its timing (fast), heart (friendly), and relevance to their life (functionality) when they do receive something. If, on Sunday, you do a great job of greeting, directing, treating, and seating your guests in a powerful worship service and then succeed in getting their contact information, you will have climbed the steepest part of the mountain. You will have already created a positive, comfortable experience reflective of God’s excellence and generosity.
But you can’t stop there. Especially when dealing with the unchurched, you will increase your chances for a return visit tenfold when you reach into their weekly lives, genuinely thank them for joining you, and encourage them to come back by continuing to show them God’s love in a practical, relevant way. It has been said: “In golf, as in life, it’s the follow-through that counts.” The same is true in your church. When it comes to keeping your guests, it’s follow-up that counts. You’ve gotten them this far. You’ve built momentum. Don’t stop midswing.
