CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Two more weeks passed and Stephanie grew impatient with how slow things were progressing. In truth, things were progressing normally, but being the impatient person she was, it seemed as if a snail itself was turning the hands of time.

Jim had been able to walk through the apartment that would be vacated in two more weeks and make a list of its needs. Overall, it was in good shape, but would be getting new paint and carpet, as well as a new dishwasher. Stephanie and Jim made a trip to Home Depot the day before to pick up the things they needed, as well as order the carpet and dishwasher. Both would be installed the day after the tenants moved out.

While they had been at Home Depot, Stephanie stayed with Jim the entire time, apprehensive about shopping alone after their last encounter there. Luckily, they did not run into the same guy. Regardless, Stephanie made sure she had her Glock with her. She wasn’t going to make that mistake again.

Stephanie wasn’t ready to find a new tenant until the apartment was ready. She knew once she found the right person, the need would be immediate. With no way to move forward, she was stuck for two more weeks.

Likewise, the house was progressing nicely, but wasn’t ready. It was mid-November and the house would be ready sometime in January. Stephanie wished she’d started to rebuild the house sooner. It would have been done by now.

Stephanie started to meet with Ken again, once a week. Ken was the trainer that taught her self-defense as well as how to shoot. He was currently teaching her additional fighting skills every time they met. The classes were helping her gain some confidence so not only could she defend herself if another situation arose, but she could also be the aggressor.

With nothing better to do, Stephanie changed into her workout gear and hopped into the truck. She drove to a local gym she’d signed up for after she moved into the apartment, but unfortunately, she hardly used the membership. Her depression had gotten the best of her and many days she didn’t feel like doing anything. She was slowly trying to change that. She had a lot to look forward to. The house would be done soon. She would continue to help people in need. Her and Derek’s relationship had greatly improved after she’d told him the truth. They were in love. She realized life wasn’t so bad after all.

I’m in love, she thought. Holy shit!

Stephanie’s heart started racing as she digested the thought. She felt that she was ready again, but her most recent betrayal made it hard for her to want to rush into it blind.

Take it slow. You’re in no hurry.

Stephanie took a few deep breaths and her heartbeat slowed. They had all the time in the world. Derek wasn’t rushing her. Even though she was gun-shy, she knew it would be okay. She had to trust. She couldn’t let her past relationships screw up her current one.
