Chapter 14
Alone
Mike Davis came back maybe ten minutes later.
Kara was sitting on the floor by then, next to the blue pillow.
She was playing peacekeeper between Steve McQueen and an enormous, fluffy, squashed-faced orange cat that was staring at Steve McQueen like heâd murdered her entire family and was now eating them right in front of her.
Dags was beginning to think Mike Davis had been right.
That cat was definitely plotting murder.
Phoenix, meanwhile, was staring down at the glass case full of pendants and rings, her eyes concentrated.
Dags wanted to ask her what she was looking at exactly, but he didnât want to bother her. Anyway, he was beginning to wonder just how weird she thought he was, and if the guy, Mike, had blown him off for the same reason.
He was about to wander around the store himself, when the sounds of the beads being parted jerked his eyes back to the arched doorway.
Mike looked straight at him, smiling.
âSheâs on her way down.â
Dags nodded, again feeling strange. âI hope the timing isnât⦠bad.â
âItâs fine,â the man assured him. âSorry I was gone so long. It just took me a while to⦠explain you. I guess.â He continued to stare at Dags. âIf you donât mind my asking⦠what are you, brother?â
Dags blinked.
He had to admit, the question threw him.
âWhat am I?â Dags said, bewildered.
Again, he wasnât sure if he should be offended or not.
Before he could say more, or the man could answer him, Phoenix slid between them, leaning on the counter once sheâd inserted herself between Dags and the warlock, Mike Davis.
âWhat do you think he is?â she said, curious, looking up at him. âWhat does he look like to you?â
Mike Davis looked at her. His dark eyes grew thoughtful, his lips hardening slightly, then he looked back at Dags.
âI honestly donât know,â he said, glancing back at Phoenix. His voice sounded completely candid, and slightly befuddled. âSomething Iâve never seen before, thatâs for sure. Something not altogether human, I suspect.â
Dags bristled at that, but the man didnât seem to notice.
He looked between them again, then shook his head, his hands resting on his hips.
âBut whatever he is,â Mike Davis added. âYou and him, youâre similar⦠possibly even the same. Youâre aware of that?â
Phoenix hesitated.
Then, glancing at Dags, she nodded.
âYes,â she said simply.
Dags opened his mouth, about to say God knows what, when the shopâs front door jingled from the bell over the frame. All four of them turned, along with the squash-faced cat and Steve McQueen, who perked up his ears, the rawhide chew still balanced between his front feet.
The cat looked relieved, and the tiniest bit smug, like it fully expected to be avenged.
The woman who walked in had long, curly, shockingly red hair, pale blue eyes, and freckles. Around the freckles and excluding her mouth, her skin was as pale as a bar of soap, contrasting the red of her hair and her blue eyes in a way that made her look ethereal.
To Dags, it also made her look a bit ghost-like.
