Becky

Forgetting to be polite, I stared after Rory. He’d been hunched over like he was in pain.

“Shouldn’t someone—”

A loud thud sounded from the other end of the apartment. Instantly I was on my feet and racing down the hallway to the door Georgette had pointed out earlier.

“Rory?” I put my hand on the doorknob.

Bear put his hand over mine, startling me. I hadn’t heard him follow me.

“He’ll be okay.”

“He fell. He might be injured.”

“No, he’s fine,” Bear said. “He wouldn’t want you to see him right now.”

“But—” I wavered.

“He’ll be fine,” Bear repeated.

I stared into Bear’s eyes, searching for reassurance. He was completely calm. I still wanted to go to Rory—oh, how I wanted to see for myself that everything was okay—but I’d just met him. It wasn’t my job to take care of him. It wasn’t Bear’s either, but he was Rory’s friend. I was—nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Suddenly embarrassed, I gave a little laugh. “Sorry. Guess I’m a worrywart sometimes.” I released the doorknob, and Bear took his hand off mine.

Bear’s eyes crinkled when he smiled. “Better to care too much than too little.” He draped his arm across my shoulders and led me back to the kitchen.

I’d lost my appetite. The food still looked and smelled good, but my thoughts were back with Rory. It was foolish of me to be so concerned about him when his friend wasn’t. Doubly foolish considering he showed no particular liking for me.

I pushed my food around on my plate and answered Georgette’s questions about my new job. After awhile, talking about how I’d have to go to remote sites for observation restarted my enthusiasm. I still had the nagging sense that something wasn’t right with Rory, but I managed to push it to the back of my mind.

“Where will you be going?” Georgette asked.

“Off Yellow Hollow Creek. It’s pretty remote, accessible only from Forest Service roads.”

“You go out in pairs, right?” Bear interjected.

“Not usually.” I gave him a quizzical look. “The state doesn’t like to spend any more money than they have to.”

“That’s a lousy excuse,” he said forcefully.

I had to laugh at his frown. “No, no, you don’t need to be so protective, Bear! Rangers patrol that area. There’s nothing to worry about.” I patted his hand, and grinned at him and Georgette. “The two of you are so sweet. I’ll be extra careful, don’t you worry.”

We talked a little longer, but Rory’s exit had killed the party atmosphere. When Georgette and Bear refused my offer to help clean up the kitchen, I hugged them good-bye and left.
