CHAPTER 11
After closing the café right on the dot of five, cleaning, and giving Annie her dinner at the cottage, Lauren sank onto a kitchen chair.
âAre you sure we need to interview Celeste at the bridal shop?â she asked.
âYes,â Zoe replied. âAnd weâd better skedaddle. She closes at seven-thirty.â
Lauren checked her watch. Just before six.
âOkay.â She sighed. âWeâll have to grab dinner on the way home.â
âThatâs what I was thinking.â Zoe grinned. âWe can stop at a fast-food joint.â
Lauren hoped it was one that included salad on their menu. She definitely wanted to fit into her gown.
Explaining to Annie what they were up to, she dropped a kiss on the felineâs forehead.
âWe wonât be long,â Zoe assured her.
âWe can all watch TV when we get back,â Lauren promised.
âBrrt.â Good.
Annie ambled toward the living room.
âLetâs go.â Zoe zipped out of the kitchen.
Lauren followed, hoping the bridal shop manager wouldnât be offended by their â Zoeâs â questioning.
Lauren observed the speed limit on the highway, and about an hour later, they arrived in Sacramento. She found a parking spot a few doors down from the shop.
âAwesome!â Zoe jumped out of the car. âCome on!â
Lauren wondered if they were doing the right thing â had Detective Castern even interviewed Celeste yet? Had Zoe thought of that? She was just about to ask her cousin, when she saw her open the door, the bell tinkling above her head.
With an inward sigh, Lauren followed.
âZoe. Lauren.â Celeste looked up from the register, a quizzical smile on her face. âIs everything okay with your outfits?â
âYes,â Lauren hastened to assure her. âI love my gown.â
âAnd I love my gorgeous co-maid of honor outfit,â Zoe added. âWeâre here about Simone. Has a Detective Castern been to see you?â
âNo.â Celeste wrinkled her brow. âNo one from law enforcement has visited me today. Why? Is something wrong?â
âWe want to make sure Simoneâs murder is solved before Laurenâs wedding,â Zoe explained.
Lauren flushed. âAnd since you mentioned youâd heard about Simoneâs behavior,â she began delicately, âwe thoughtââ
âWeâd ask you a little more about it,â Zoe finished. âBecause Detective Castern isnât veryââ
âZoe,â Lauren warned.
âMmm â you might be right.â Zoe made a moue. âAnyway, what we wanted to know was, who told you about Simone trying to steal peopleâs boyfriends or grooms away from them? Maybe they had a motive to kill her, because Simone actually did it!â
âDid what?â Celeste looked a little puzzled.
âStole their significant other,â Zoe explained. âMaybe her come hither charm actually worked on one of the grooms, and the bride-to-be was furious and BAM! She killed Simone for revenge.â
Celeste looked like she was stifling a smile.
âWell, I canât think of anyone offhand,â she began.
âWhen did you first hear rumors about Simone?â Lauren prompted.
âOh, let me see, a few months ago.â She nodded. âYes, thatâs right. One of my brides came into the shop, crying, because she said Simone had flirted with her fiancé, and heâd flirted back. I tried to calm her down and said at least it was only
