When one person feels the conflict and is unable to use other solutions (e.g., negotiation), it might help if the therapist (or parent, or even adolescent) talks the issue through by directing the person through the following questions. These are rhetorical questions—it is the asking, not any specific answer, that can help the person get unstuck and promote movement toward an issue-focused, present-oriented, and conciliatory climate.

Exactly what is the issue of concern to you?

Exactly what would satisfy you?

How important is that goal to you?

Have you tried to get what you want through problem solving?

How much conflict are you willing to risk to get what you want?
