Chapter twelve

Mia

Awareness comes in stages.

The first is pain and discomfort. The second is the gentle breathing of multiple people nearby. The third is the strong scents of the four alphas I've come to know, if only a little bit. The final blow is sheer terror.

"Shh, Mia," a voice whispers gently—too gently. "It's okay. You're okay."

My eyes peel open, and the arched ceiling of the attic room comes into view. It's dim in here, the soft lighting bringing a weird sense of peace that allows the panic to taper off and die. I don't know why I felt such intense fear. I can only imagine my nightmare was truly awful.

I try to move, but the moment I shift, pain flares hot all over my body, and I wince.

"Don't try to move yet, pretty," the same voice from before says.

Carter. It's Carter. I turn to look at him, the movement enough to make me ache, but I need to look at him. Need to see him. I don't question it and the moment my eyes take in his unusually disheveled blonde hair I frown.

"What's wrong?" I ask, voice hoarse.

He frowns, glancing over to the corner of the room near the door and leans in until he's sitting on the edge of the bed, voice nothing more than a whisper. "The others are sleeping. What do you remember?"

"Remember?"

"Yes, remember. What do you remember before waking up?"

I think back, even though his question is strange. "Breakfast. Getting assigned the fields." I shake my head. "No. I remember being in the fields. There were strange noises. A… a person? Was there a person?" Carter stays silent. "There were a few betas in the cornfields, I think. They were… off. Wrong. They… Did they…? No. That can't be right."

The alpha very gently reaches for my face and tucks my hair behind my ear. "You were attacked, pretty. The betas hurt you, but we took care of them. You're safe now, and one of us will always be within sight of you from now on. To protect you. We've all agreed."

I'm already shaking my head, which hurts, but I don't stop. This can't be right, but the images in my head line up with Carter's admission. The beatings to my face, the shouts, the leers, the rough hands, the pain, the invasion of my most private place—all these horrible things are pressing against my head, forcing me to relive them, and I panic.

My breathing is erratic, my pulse hammering away like a frightened bird. Carter is there suddenly, in my face, and there's a rattling sound, a purr playing just for me, trying to soothe me. It's working, and so are the words he murmurs to me. I can't make them out with the weird tunneling I'm feeling, but I can tell another voice has joined his, and then a third. And then a fourth.

They're awake. They're here—my alphas. Keeping me safe. It's okay. Everything is okay.

Slowly I calm, and the world rushes back in. Carter is wrapped around me, his purr rattling through my front in the best ways.
