Chapter 21

“I was starting to be concerned for you.” Scarlet’s face filled the computer screen, her lipstick perfect and her hair coiffed despite it being a lazy Sunday morning in her world. She didn’t look particularly worried, but her eyes sparked wide and alert.

“Hold that thought,” I said, leaving the laptop open and turning toward the door as a timid tap sounded. “Come in, Rupert.”

My least favorite coworker led with his right cheek, as if expecting a blow. Fingers clutched the side of the door, which was still only halfway open, shielding him perfectly from Thom’s presence. His gaze swept the Moon Room. “You’re alone.”

“Close the door,” I suggested, forcing my toes not to bounce me up and down the way they wanted to. My star-ball sword was hidden beneath the jacket Dixie Lee had loaned me, something deeply flattering and dangerous-looking at the same time.

I was dressed for success and Rupert was here to face the music. Thom was present as backup and Scarlet was ready to serve as witness. All I needed was to block out looky-loos in the parking lot then we could continue to the grand reveal.

To that end, I raised my eyebrows and waited. Rupert’s mouth pinched down, but he finally obeyed, if not without commentary.

“I appreciate caviar and fine wines,” he observed as the exterior door snicked shut. “There are three places between here and Roanoke that are up to my standards. The first is....”

We didn’t learn where the fine-dining establishments were located. Because Thom stepped out from behind the closing door, sliding so smoothly into Rupert’s personal space that the Lawkeeper was left gaping. Broad hands closed around bony wrists. Rupert didn’t even try to twist free until he was 100% caught.

Only then did Thom jerk his chin at me. As we’d agreed, I drew my sword, planning to take blood from a distance. But Rupert squeaked, the scent of urine biting my nostrils.

“It’s only coffee!” Rupert’s words fell over themselves in his haste to protect his skin from my weapon. “And toilet paper. And the paperclips are just nicer in the office!”

I paused. “You take paperclips also?”

“I’ll replace them! I’ll replace all of it! This isn’t an appropriate punishment for a minor crime!”

Janet Allegra’s death was far from minor, but there was no point in bringing that up until I’d sealed Rupert’s cooperation. So I soothed him. “I only want a few drops of blood. A pinprick. The wound will heal in an hour.”

“Then prick my finger! Not my neck! I only have one neck. I need it. Do you realize how useless heads are without necks to set them on? I’ve....”

Thom growled and Rupert fell silent. “If you’re tempted to do anything stupid when I let go of your arm,” Thom murmured, just barely loud enough for me to hear, “remember I’m right behind you.”

“Nothing stupid. I swear. Not a thing. I’ll just stick my finger out, slow and easy....”

Rupert didn’t do anything stupid, but he did jerk the moment my sword connected.
