Responding to critical feedback
People like us, who write or present professionally, seldom, if ever, create a perfectly organised, logical, grammatical, cogent, accessible and attractive piece of work at first attempt. Therefore, we establish networks of trusted colleagues willing to give honest but supportive comment on our drafts until we are satisfied that our public at large will not only understand, but become engaged and hopefully inspired by our crafted and honed work. Your main sources of feedback are your supervisors, so when you receive your first, tentative drafts back, try to be glad rather than despairing if they are covered with corrections and comments. These will help you to âcraft and honeâ your work and present it in the quite particular fashion required in a thesis. Remember that even after assiduous proof-reading (which you should always do), the most experienced of us sometimes indulge in over-long sentences or fail to make points clearly because they seem obvious to us.
Because supervisors will be seeking to improve your writing and lines of argument, you may need sometimes to request more positive feedback, such as which parts are written in the required style, to help you understand the expected standard. Do not be shy if this kind of feedback would help you. Also, seek out a range of potential informants in addition to your supervisors. Integrating this greater variety of feedback will help your individual writing style develop and mature.
