CHAPTER 15

When Joe and Kerri left, Anna immediately called Jeremy. She was anxious to share her idea on how to find Bella’s address. When her call went straight to voicemail, Anna realized that he was probably busy tracking down information on Murray’s murder.

Anna hopped behind the counter and kept Velma and Mary company as they served the occasional customer. Even though the shop was slow, she spent most of the afternoon at Bella’s Dream, since she couldn’t reach Jeremy, and Joe was at the police station seeing what he could learn from Charlie.

As Anna was feeding Casper at the end of the night, Joe called.

“Did you learn anything more about Murray’s death?” she asked, without bothering to say hello.

“Nothing all that useful. The coroner estimated the time of death to sometime between 9:00 and 11:00 last night.”

“That doesn’t tell us a whole lot.”

“I called Kerri for an update, and she said that she called the customers who were supposed to receive deliveries yesterday, and everyone received their orders. So, Murray had already completed his route when he was murdered. I’m going to help Kerri out with some deliveries tomorrow, so I’ll keep my eyes peeled.”

“Let me know how it goes,” Anna said.

Anna locked up the shop for the night, and while she was walking home, Jeremy finally called.

“I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you,” he said. “I’ve been tied up all day with the latest murder investigation. I assume you heard what happened. It’s all over the news.”

“Joe called me this morning and told me, and Kerri came by my shop after she spoke to Charlie. This one is a real puzzle.”

“Kerri answered a few questions for me today, as well. I felt really badly for her. She’s been through a lot in the past couple of weeks.”

“Joe offered to make some deliveries for Finnegan’s Creamery, since Kerri doesn’t have any drivers left. He certainly is a man of many skills.”

Jeremy laughed. “I’m sure he’ll be requesting his salary in ice cream.”

“When you put it that way, it’s the perfect job for Joe. But I didn’t call to talk about Murray’s death,” Anna said.

“You called about Bella, then. I meant to tell you that I left her a voicemail about Monday. I played it cool and asked her if she forgot about our meeting. But she hasn’t called me back.”

“That’s all right,” Anna said. “It may not matter anymore. I had a conversation last night with my neighbor, Wanda, and she said something that gave me an idea on how we can find Bella’s address. I think it just might work.”

“I’m leaving the newsroom right now. How about if I spin by your house and you can tell me about it?”

“I’ll heat some water for hot chocolate.”

Jeremy arrived as Anna was pulling the kettle off the stove. She poured two mugs of cocoa, and they took them into the living room.

“You have me on the edge of my seat,” Jeremy said. “Tell me about your idea.
