CHAPTER 5

The desk sergeant welcomed them the following day and reported that the suspect had been restless all night, pacing his cell until the early hours of the morning.

“We’ll leave him half an hour or so. His solicitor is supposed to be coming in at nine-thirty. We’ll see if anyone shows up and go from there. I suppose that will be dependent upon whether they’re available. If that’s a negative, then we’ll have to put in a request for the duty solicitor to attend.”

“Let me know if and when you need me to contact anyone,” Pat said.

“We will. See you in a little while.” Sally tapped her code into the keypad, and the door sprang open, allowing her and Lorne to enter. “I’m going to leave the post until later. We’ll make a coffee and compare notes in my office, if you’re up for it?”

“Suits me, not that I have much to offer. By the time we’d finished dinner and cleared up after my late arrival home last night, it was already nine o’clock.”

“Yeah, ditto. It was definitely an ‘all work and no play’ kind of day. As I see it, our main priority seems to be interviewing Pratt and then rooting around in his past to see what we can come up with about his associate.”

“Yeah, somehow, I don’t think having a poke around his social media accounts is going to cut it, do you?”

“Sadly not.”

They reached the main office and greeted the rest of the team.

“I hope everyone is in good spirits and had a restful evening yesterday because we’re going to need to hit the ground running at full pelt this morning.” Sally noted that the others all had a cup of coffee on their desks, so she didn’t bother asking if they wanted one. She poured herself and Lorne a drink and then loitered at the door before they retired to the office. “We’re going to spend the next thirty minutes going over the notes we made last night. I’d like everyone to carry on with the research they started yesterday into Pratt’s background, with the intention of putting a name and face to his mysterious partner.”

The team put their heads down, and Lorne followed Sally into her office. They sat opposite each other and opened up their notebooks.

“If Pratt doesn’t speak to us after being banged up all night, I’m not sure where we go from here,” Sally said.

“Hey, don’t sound so down about it, Sal, it’s still early days. Maybe we should call the lab, and see if they discovered any prints on the body, other than Pratt’s, that we can run through the system.”

“That’s a great idea. I’ll give them a call just before we go downstairs. Let me hear what you have.”

“Nothing major, just the usual probing questions. It was still rankling me last night how shocked his wife was about his arrest.”

“Me, too.” Sally didn’t get the chance to add anything else because her phone rang. “DI Sally Parker. How may I help?”

“It’s Pat on reception, ma’am.
