It was just before eleven when Winnie finished her description of Susan and sent it to McBride. She didn’t have any plans for the rest of the day, which sounded good. Unless . . .

“You want to go where?” Thelma asked.

“Many Glacier to do some hiking.”

“Hiking, huh. What trail?”

“Oh, I don’t know. There are a bunch. Maybe the Grinnell Glacier hike.”

“Winnie . . .”

“Fine. I want to take one last look at the trail. There must have been something there worth finding, because when I went the second time, there was a guy on it looking for something.”

“It’s too late to take the hike. We can find a shorter one if you want to stretch your legs.”

“But I did some research. Did you know there are boats at Many Glacier that can shave hours off of the trip? The boat rides bypass two miles each way. If we left now, we could catch one, follow the rest of the trail, take a boat back, and be back here in time for me to cook you a wonderful dinner. Today seems like a taco Tuesday.”

“It’s Friday.”

“Come on. It’ll be fun. And there are so many people on the trail; nothing could possibly happen.”

“Except someone was already killed on the trail.”

“Yes, but that was early morning, when normal people are still sleeping. Not during the day. If you’re not up to it, maybe I’ll just go. Can you watch Patches for me?”

Thelma gave Winnie a hard look. “I’ll drive. That way, I can at least pretend to be in charge. Get your backpack and meet me here in fifteen.”

She could hear Thelma mumbling something about a pain in the neck—at least Winnie thought she said neck—as Thelma retreated to her bedroom. Winnie went back to her RV and got snacks, water, a raincoat, and her bear spray. When she came back to the Airstream, Thelma’s mood didn’t look much improved.

It was windy, and Winnie could see some dark clouds in the distance, when they said goodbye to Patches. JC promised to take him for several walks while they were away. Winnie hated leaving him so often lately, but she knew Patches would be in good hands.

Thelma yanked hard on the passenger’s door of her pickup truck. The dented door was red while the rest of the truck was silver. At least it was silver when it was new. Now it resembled more of a rust and primer motif. “Urban camouflage,” Thelma called it as Winnie stepped on the running board, causing it to creak as she hoisted herself up and into the cab. Thelma slammed the door, and the truck rocked from the impact.

Thelma coaxed the engine into starting and pulled away. “She ain’t much, but she runs great and never gives me any real problems.”

When they turned onto the road, the truck belched a bright blue puff of smoke. Thirty-five minutes later, they pulled into the Many Glacier Hotel’s parking lot. Before they got out, Thelma looked over at Winnie. “I’m
