Chapter 16

“Miss Frost?” A small voice asked, but startled her enough that she nearly fell into the vat of boiling lye. Camilla stirred it once more before turning. Verity Bullock stood timidly with her hands clasped in front of her. Oliver was right behind her. “I wondered…” She eyed the laundry vat, then back at Camilla. “Could we speak outside?”

“Of course,” Camilla said, wiping her hands on her apron before removing it and placing it on a hook. Had it been any of the other students, she might have asked that they speak to her as she continued working since they might have come as a favor to Aline or Evandrus to draw her out. Verity was not as well acquainted with either for them to ask. At least she hoped.

They had help for household things such as the laundry, but Camilla was avoiding the two changers and did not want to happen upon them in their lessons. It felt familiar, avoiding them, and though they both meant immensely more to her than they did the last time she took such pains to avoid them, they had both accepted it and did not seek her out either.

The place where they washed linens and clothing was tucked away enough that she suspected neither of them would think to look for her there, but perhaps helping with the laundry was unnecessary.

When the MacLughs returned, she would need to decide whether to tell them who was responsible for Gemma’s death the instant they arrived, or wait for them to find out themselves. Which, she knew, they had the power to do.

But it was more reason to keep her distance.

Camilla did not realize how uncomfortable the vat of hot lye made the room and how badly her eyes burned with the lye until she stepped out into the open—and much cooler—air. She took a breath and closed her eyes, then ignited a burst of frost.

When she opened her eyes, both Verity and Oliver looked at her curiously. She did not answer their unasked question and instead waited for Verity to lead the conversation.

Verity gave a sidelong glance at Oliver before speaking. “I wondered…” she began again. “I know that the school is new and Headmistress Dracul and the other instructors are busy with the changers but I wondered…” She trailed off again and shot another glance at Oliver.

He gave no response but a smile and a look that Camilla could not tell if he knew what she wanted to ask or not.

“What are you asking, Verity?”

“Perhaps I am not the best person to be asking as I have never become acquainted with one myself, but… well… after speaking with Simin and Grace, the maos, it occurred to me that—”

“Have you ever thought about teaching vampires at the school?” Oliver interrupted. Something flashed across his face before vanishing. “That’s what she wanted to ask.”

Verity looked at him with a questioning look, then back at Camilla.

“Vampires?”

“The maos said they never asked to be bitten. It was not their wish, nor their choice to become changers,” Verity continued.
