The snow was letting up a bit, so I thought it would be fine to drive. I had sent Miles back home, as I was sure I would be OK. My right hand was almost normal, and I could use it to drive while babying the left one. Anyway, I had a plan. I was only going to be driving into town and then around the lake.

The power was still off, so I planned to get dressed and head over to Marina's and then Falcon Lake Resort. Everyone knew they had generators and stayed open during power outages. Thank goodness.

With Brad still committed to the 'crime of convenience' theory, I felt there was nothing stopping me from working the case the same as if I were back on the job. I had no idea who he thought might be involved in Kayla's death. But I could see plenty of motives beyond some punks who might have been willing to wait around in minus 30-degree weather to score a few hundred dollars from a small café. They must make them sturdier up here than down in Windsor, I thought snidely.

Anyway, Brad could have his local bad boys. Whatever they had done to come to his attention I'm sure they deserved it. But for my money, they had nothing to do with killing Kayla. I had a decent list of my own to work with.

I thought I'd start with Everett, the young server who’d had the pleasure of escorting Matthew Bryant from the premises the other night.

An absolutely sickening feeling washed over me as I pulled into the parking lot at Marina's. My last visit had ended in a tragedy that would stay with me forever. I turned the engine off, and sat there quietly for a few minutes, allowing myself some time for happier memories of Kayla. I shook my head and climbed slowly out into the wet, blowing snow. The least I could do was get busy and work on finding out who was responsible for what had happened.

I pushed open the door and stamped the clumps of snow off my boots. Taking a quick glance around, I wandered over to a small table and waited for Everett to stop by for my order. I was happy to see that the weather and likely some unplowed driveways had kept people at home. I knew the café would fill up later with people seeking warmth and cooked food, but at the moment the only other customers were a group of snowmobilers seated at a large table across the room.

Everett came out from behind the counter. He was smiling, but it didn't quite reach his eyes, "Hey, Claire. What can I get for you?" I ordered a latte and a bagel. No cheesecake for me today. He brought my order over a few minutes later and I said, "Thanks a lot. Much appreciated today."

"For sure. No power at your place?"

"No. But now that I'm here I don't care," I said with a smile.
