Chapter 24

Ronald Davis, the head of the ORT, leans back in his chair, cigar in hand. He follows the trail of smoke as it rises to the ceiling and spreads across the yellowing, dusty paint before dissipating throughout the room.

‘What a day,’ he says to himself, as he takes in a deep breath and shuts his eyes, listening to the gentle hum of the air conditioner.

So much is going on around him, yet everything is still moving too damn slow.

He sits forward and lets out a deep breath. There’s a knock at the door. It opens before he has a chance to respond. Kim Lee walks in and Ronald gestures for her to sit.

‘Drink?’ he asks her.

She nods, and he proceeds to remove an hourglass bottle filled with a golden liquid from the drawer beside him. He places it on the desk before taking out two diamond-patterned glasses. Ronald fills both glasses halfway and pushes one across his oak desk.

‘Enjoy,’ he says. ‘The best whisky money can buy.’

Ms Kim Lee, business partner of a well-known terrorist organisation, nods tightly then leans forward and clutches the glass with delicate fingers. The two raise their glasses in a mild salute before taking a sip.

‘Things are running smoothly, yes?’ Kim asks, leaning back in her chair.

‘So far, yes,’ Ronald responds. ‘A few minor issues. Nothing we can’t handle.’

Kim’s eyebrows raise imperceptibly, introducing the hint of a crease in her near-flawless complexion. A face full of botox, Ronald guesses.

‘Issues?’ Kim asks.

Ronald waves his hand dismissively, creating a smoke trail with his cigar. ‘Nothing of concern. Government irritations, that’s all. Nothing we can’t work with.’

Kim takes another sip before inspecting the glass. ‘We don’t like to be disappointed, Mr Davis,’ she says sternly, before looking back up at him.

Kim’s eyes drill into him. The collar of Ronald’s shirt suddenly feels tighter, and he can feel the sweat beginning to bead on his forehead. He glances over at the air conditioner, humming irritably, before turning back to Kim, stuffing the cigar back into his mouth and taking a long draw.

‘As I said, we are on track to—’

‘Because a lot of money is riding on this,’ Kim interrupts, tilting her head. ‘A lot of money.’

Ronald knows every cell of his spreadsheets. Endless bills are coming in – and fast. It has been a slow couple of years, but the spending hasn’t let up. The company has spread itself too thin and expanded way too fast. Contracts have been lost and mistakes made, resulting in this deal. It is, in Ronald’s eyes, the only solution to save the company.

‘Everything’s fine,’ Ronald responds bluntly. ‘You will get your money as soon as the people wake.’ He takes another sip and wipes his brow. ‘You did say they would wake after a few days? You tested the stuff before you gave it to us, yeah?’

Kim shrugs, impassively. ‘Yes, we believe so.’

‘What the hell is that supposed to mean?’ Ronald snaps. ‘You said you had tested it, and people woke up after a few days.
