‘Big Wilderness’

Wilf paced across the room, arms folded behind his back. The floorboards creaked beneath him. He ran his eyes over the surface of the table. A miniature model of the city and the surrounding mountains, no more than a jumble of wooden blocks and hastily assembled sculptures, gave him an overview of what would soon become their battlefield.

“There’s something on your mind, isn’t there?” Elanor asked. She leaned against the window, watching the city beyond.

“I’m running over what Owen and his Tamers told us,” Wilf replied. “The army’s got only one place it’s gonna come out, see? We know where it’ll be when it arrives.” He lowered his voice. “But I don’t know what we’re gonna do to face it.”

Elanor left the window and wandered over. “This is not just about the army, is it?”

Wilf cracked a weak smile. “You know me well.”

“Ava will be fine,” Elanor said. “You know that. She and the others know what they’re doing.”

“I ain’t worried about her,” Wilf replied. “She’s a talented wanderer now. She hasn’t needed my help in ages.”

Eleanor placed a hand over his. “She still needs your guidance. It’s a big wilderness out there.”

“Ah, she’s got more than enough knowledge.” Wilf broke away and strode to the window. “Ever since our Bunker went up in flames, it got me thinking.”

“About what?” Elanor asked.

“About what we call our home. The Bunker was a special place, you know it as well as I do. But the wild—” he stretched out his arms “—that’s our true home. The whole thing.” He paused. “It makes me wonder what all these city-folk plan on doin’ with it.”

“They’re not greedy,” Elanor replied. “Not like the coal-families or the Frostreavers. I’ve spoken to them. They want a new life.”

Wilf chuckled. “Don’t we all. That’s what brought us together.” He turned away from the window. “But maybe the time for laying low is over. Like Jess said, someone has to keep ‘em safe.”

“What are you planning?”

“Nothing, yet.” He sighed. “But ever since arriving in this here city, I haven’t stopped thinking about my own birthplace. They needed my help then—and I deserted them.”

Elanor’s brow creased. “Nobody can blame you for that. You were young. Governor Adrian was only using it as a weapon against you—”

“I ain’t interested in the likes of what our old governor thinks,” Wilf said, cutting her off. “But this army gives me the chance to be part of something bigger than myself—bigger than the wild, even. After a whole life spent running and hiding, maybe this is just the change I need.”

“The people look up to you, that much is clear,” Elanor said. “Why didn’t you tell us any of this?”

“Didn’t want to worry you. Ava’s got enough to think about, without my ramblings weighing her down.”

Elanor put her arms around Wilf’s neck. “I know you’ll make the right choice. You’ve never stopped looking out for us, in your own way. This time will be no different.”

Wilf returned her embrace. The mix of her perfume and his pipe-smoke made his nose crinkle.
