If I had filed the story of the Bosnian general not wanting to fire on the Vitez base for the South China Morning Post, it would not have registered. If I had filed it for the Daily Telegraph, you would presume that it would be on a Minister’s desk with a yellow highlight across it, and all the right people would have seen it in MI6. What is the major ethical difference in me bypassing the broadcasting process and going straight to the people who are going to get it anyway? By doing it, I was saying that this is a critical problem and you need to deal with it right now. I suppose I could have run back to Vitez, persuaded a BBC hack that this was an interesting story, but that I had not got any pictures to back it up, and the guy I had spoken to was someone I could not easily have found again. What are you going to do? How are you going to report it?
