Beachside Grill/Leilani’s on the Beach STEAK/SEAFOOD The Beachside Grill is the informal, less-expensive room downstairs on the beach, where folks wander in off the sand for a frothy beer and a beachside burger. Leilani’s is the dinner-only room, with more expensive but still not outrageously priced steak and seafood offerings. At Leilani’s, you can order everything from fresh fish to filet mignon to fried coconut prawns. All of this, of course, comes with an ocean view. There’s live music Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 3 to 5pm.
At Whalers Village, 2435 Kaanapali Pkwy., Kaanapali. www.leilanis.com. 808/661-4495. Reservations suggested for dinner. Main courses $10–$20 Beachside Grill, $20–$40 Leilani’s. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Beachside Grill daily 11am–11pm. Leilani’s daily 5–9:30pm.
Cane & Taro★ ASIAN FUSION Another winner in Chef D.K. Kodama’s growing list of fabulous restaurants (Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar on Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island; and d.k Steakhouse, Hiroshi, and Vino on Oahu), Cane & Taro marks a departure from the chef’s creative sushi, steaks, and tapas. Located oceanside in the former Rusty Harpoon Restaurant, it has fantastic panoramic views that quickly become secondary when the meal arrives. Breakfast includes five kinds of eggs Benedict; lunch and dinner feature award-winning items such as rock-shrimp dynamite (crispy tempura rock shrimp with a masago aioli and unagi glaze), crunchy noodle crab and shrimp cake (with ginger-lime-chili and cilantro pesto), and Kona-coffee baby back ribs (roasted with coffee-mango barbecue sauce and served with a smoked tomato slaw). The restaurant is always packed. Tip: Tuesday and Wednesday, if you are seated between 5 and 5:30pm, your meal is 50% off (25% off Thurs–Mon).
At Whaler’s Village, 2435 Kaanapali Pkwy., Kaanapali. www.dkrestaurants.com. 808/662-0668. Reservations recommended for dinner. Main courses $10–$16 lunch, $23–$40 dinner. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Daily 8am–11am, 11:30am–4:30pm, and 5–10pm.
Duke’s Beach House ★★ PACIFIC RIM Perched on the side of the ocean, facing the beautiful Kaanapali Beach and housed in what appears to be an open-air plantation home, the latest of TS Restaurants (which include Kimo’s and Leilani’s on Maui) opened in late 2009. It was a winner from the start, with a fabulous beachfront location and great decor, but more important, the food is fabulous. Following the new locavore tradition, the staff is committed to a “farm to fork” dining experience and stresses that ingredients are obtained on Maui. Breakfast features a host of omelets, eggs, pancakes, and even a “beach boy burrito” (with eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, chipotle cream, and avocado salsa); the lunch menu features creative salads, sandwiches, burgers, and fresh fish. Dinner adds steaks, chicken, and a seafood risotto. Leave room for the hula pie—Oreo cookie crust topped with macadamia-nut ice cream, hot fudge, and whipped cream—for dessert.
At Honua Kai Resort & Spa, 130 Kai Malina Pkwy., Kaanapali. www.dukesmaui.com. 808/662-2900. Main courses $10–$15 breakfast, $10–$15 lunch, $20–$35 dinner; 3-course tasting menu $26 5–6pm. AE, MC, V. Daily 7:30am–9:30pm.
Umalu★ PACIFIC RIM This is the kind of restaurant that visitors dream about.
