Chapter Ten

The one thing Nyree hated more than being woken up out of her sleep, or room temperature water, was being sent on a dummy mission.

“This my last time meeting with any of his people,” she fumed, ready to pull out of the secluded area she’d parked in.

Her eyes scanned the parking lot she was supposed to be meeting one of Maverick's homeboys in for what seemed the hundredth time. According to Maverick, he should’ve pulled up ten minutes ago. The only reason she was sticking around was because he wanted to cop a hefty amount. Money was money, but now she realized doing business with some people wasn’t going to fly.

Just as she began to place her car in drive, the make and model of the vehicle Maverick had described to her, pulled up next to her. Sighing, Nyree grabbed the pills. The man’s appearance made her stomach coil as he looked much older than a guy who would hang with Maverick and his boys. Then again, not everyone in college was in their twenties, so she shook off her weird energy and rolled her window down.

“Nyree?” the man questioned.

She nodded her head. “Yeah. They’re all here.”

When he reached in his pocket, she assumed he was pulling out the money, but instead, the guy displayed a police badge. The color drained from Nyree’s face as she tried to put her car in drive and pull off. That was her first instinct, but she failed. The officer yanked on her door, stopping all efforts of an attempted high speed because that’s surely what’d they be on with her.

“You’re hurting my arm!” Nyree shouted as he roughly pulled her from the driver’s seat.

The extra officer, who seemed to appear out of nowhere, had her heart thudding wildly in her chest. Nyree had read the news articles, watched clips, and marched to protest against the killing of Black people, specifically women, at the hands of police. She prayed she wasn’t another statistic.

“Ma’am, just relax and cooperate. That’s all we’re asking,” the second officer spoke.

Afraid of losing her life behind a drug transaction gone wrong, Nyree did as she was asked. After being placed in handcuffs that elicited sharp pains to her shoulder, she was placed in the back of the discreet squad car. Anger soured through her chest as one of the officers began to search her vehicle.

“That mothafucka set me up,” she hissed.

Then, she thought about how she was going to explain this to not only her mama but to Juice as well. He’d warned her about moving so sloppily yet hadn’t taken heed to his forewarning. Worry began to settle as they pulled off the lot twenty minutes later. Nyree was a tough girl, but she’d never been involved with the law. Not to the point where she got arrested anyway.

Calling Nakita was out of the question when she was given a chance to call someone. Hoping her Uncle Chris could get her out of this jam, she dialed his number.
