CHAPTER 31

Grant pulled the plastic lid off of his cup of coffee and blew across the surface of the steaming liquid as he walked to his gate. With any luck, his flight would be on time, and he’d be home before the girls went to bed. He needed this hit of caffeine.

He was exhausted from his week on the project site. The eighteen-hour days he’d put in would allow him to spend the following week at home. Being away from his family was like a festering wound for him, with no relief until he got home. He knew men who relished the opportunity to spend quiet time in a hotel room. He wasn’t one of them.

He took the remaining seat in the packed waiting area for his flight. He was wedged between a woman who was wrangling three small children and an older man who was dozing in his chair, with a copy of a newspaper crumpled on his lap. One child sneezed, showering Grant’s knee with droplets.

Grant rose quickly and found an open spot along a column. He rested his back against it and checked his watch. Boarding started in another fifteen minutes. He took a swig of his coffee.

Diedre had been thrilled when he’d promised her that he would take her to her audition next week. And Zoe was eager to tell him all about her idea for her science fair project. Grant smiled, remembering the winning science fair projects he and his twin brother Craig had worked on together.

Grant didn’t know much about musical theater, but science fair projects were right up his alley. He was excited to hear what Zoe had in mind. Maybe she and her classmates would let him help them. He shut his eyes briefly as he remembered how his dad had practically taken over their projects. Craig had gotten really mad at their father one year. Grant drank more coffee and made a mental note to rein himself in. This was Zoe’s project, not his. He’d ask Emily to monitor his involvement, too. She’d tell him if he was overstepping the mark.

The public address system at the gate crackled and a woman’s voice announced that group A would board in five minutes.

Grant drained his cup and took his place in line. He might be tired, but he and Emily were making their combined lives work. They hadn’t needed to hire a nanny, after all. In a few short hours, he’d be back to his happy, peaceful home.
