Nate

I sit in the corner with my back to the wall. Call it a throwback from my days behind bars, but I hate anyone being able to sneak up behind me.

Fox and Levi approach the table with trays of food in their hands. Honestly, it feels like high school all over again, well, except that the guys now pulling out chairs are lethal black-ops soldiers and the rest of the people here are far from ordinary.

“You guys speak to AJ yet?” I ask as they shovel food into their mouths.

I watch as Fox clears his plate first, knowing he won't answer until the nutritionally balanced breakfast of scrambled eggs and whole-wheat toast is finished.

People hate eating the same damn healthy foods on rotation over and over again, but it never bothered us. We can all remember far too well how it felt to go hungry. It made you a little more appreciative than others who might take it for granted.

“I haven't seen him since he gave me the message yesterday to meet you guys after his shift finishes,” Levi tells me before continuing to eat his own food.

Fox pushes his plate away and takes a swig from his water bottle before finally speaking to me.

“I passed him on the way over. He said to make sure you all stick around as he needs to talk to us about something important,” Fox says.

“Maybe he’s rounded up a couple more recruits,” Levi comments, finishing up his eggs.

I look at Fox to gauge his response, but he just shrugs. It's possible, I guess.

The thing about the Phoenix group is that they are smart. Everyone here is alive thanks to them, so even people who are unhappy here feel indebted to them in some way. Plus, most still think they need the serum to live. You can't go around yelling about nanobots and shit without people thinking you’re crazy. For that, we need tangible proof.

There were a handful of people though who had started to realize that things were not right—families being unreachable, nobody being allowed off-site except for a select few, and the guns for hire like us guys.

Nemo might be locked up below us, but this whole place is a prison.

“The Beta squad finally got approved for off-site operations. Christian let me know they will be unreachable for a few days as they’re on their mission,” I tell them. The members of the old Beta team were killed in a freak accident when their chopper exploded as they were heading home from a routine training operation. The new Beta squad is the newly promoted team of six soldiers we had been training to replace them. The new guys had been training under us from the beginning and were well aware of the truth behind Phoenix. When the time came, they would be instrumental in bringing this place down.

“Hey, guys,” AJ calls, dropping into the only vacant seat available.

“What’s got you so hyped up?” Fox asks him, his eyes taking him in much like I am.
