‌FROM THE DEPTHS

‌F. Britten Austin

Frederick Britten Austin (1885–1941) was a prolific contributor to the magazines in the years between the First and Second World Wars, particularly to The Strand. His appearances started before the War whilst working as a clerk in the London Stock Exchange but on the day War was declared in 1914 he signed up for the London Rifle Brigade. He served with the British Expeditionary Force and Royal Army Service Corps throughout the First World War, rising to the rank of Captain. He used his military knowledge in many series. A Saga of the Sword (1928), traced the history of warfare in fictional form, A Saga of the Sea (1929), likewise retold early naval exploration and battles and The Red Flag (1932) looked at the power of the people through the centuries. Amongst Austin’s other stories was his series featuring the detective Quentin Quayne which, unaccountably, was not collected into book-form. The following story was included in his 1922 collection On the Borderland, which contains several more of his strange tales.
