Chapter 14

“What the hell is that thing?”

Blake Harris nervously glanced back and forth between the fire portal and where Lotte, Olive, and Eric sat as they prepared candles on the floor of the old barn.

He was a rather average-looking man in his mid-sixties, with salty hair and a goatee, portly, but not obese. He had more the look of a salesman than a soldier, and he’d spent the better part of the past two hours trying to smooth-talk his way out of the jam in which he now found himself.

“Don’t worry, Mr. Harris,” Lotte casually explained. “Soon, you’ll know everything there is to be known about this object. It’s a portal, to another place—another plane, or dimension, or universe. It’s where the creature who captured you came from. You’ll see how it works shortly. It’s quite similar to the portal you were trying to get your hands on, and almost did.”

He again launched into his familiar litany. “How do you know my name? I had no goddamned clue what that fucking sculpture was. Portal to another plane? I call bullshit! Even if that’s true, I had no idea what it was. I swear! It was all just a big mistake!”

“Then can you please explain to us why you wanted it so badly? What was it that drove you to kidnap me, and that innocent little girl? What was so important to you?”

“For the tenth time, why should I tell you? What good will it do me? You aren’t gonna let me go. In fact, I think you’re gonna let that... that... fucking thing kill me! So, why should I say anything?”

She considered for a moment, then answered, a chill in her voice. “For your wife... the smiling lady on the ‘for sale’ sign in front of the house where you held me. It won’t be hard for us to track her down. She’ll share your fate unless you answer our questions. Do you have children, Mr. Harris?”

“Goddamn you. You leave my family out of this!”

“Like you did? Doesn’t feel so good to be on the other end of threats like that, does it?”

He hung his head. “No, it doesn’t. What I did was wrong. I understand that now, but listen... I know you won’t believe me, but just listen. I didn’t mean it. All I wanted was that thing, and I thought this was the easiest way to get it. I was wrong. I wish I never even heard about the damned sculpture, artifact, portal, what-the-fuck ever.”

He finally seemed to be breaking down under her incessant interrogation. Eric could tell that she almost had him.

“How did you hear about it? Tell us what you know. For all the wrong you’ve done, this may be the way to make at least something right.”

He finally capitulated. “Okay, you win. What the hell have I got to lose at this point, anyway? Early November last year, I got a call from the State Department. They had a visitor from the new Iraqi government. Malaki had finally gotten kicked out in September.
