All the lights in the penthouse were turned on and all the curtains were closed. Evening was approaching, but Maverick and Echo were bustling about, preparing a huge breakfast. The heavenly smell of pancakes tickled my nose from down the hall.

When I entered the kitchen, Tristan was preparing to open the curtains since the sun’s intensity had faded and it was finally safe for the others. I sat at the dining table and Maverick placed a huge stack of pancakes in front of me.

“Ladies first.” He winked.

“Thanks!” I reached for the syrup with my one good hand and slathered my stack with sugary goodness before digging in heartily, not bothering to wait on the others. It was the first stack of pancakes I’d been able to enjoy in months.

Killian and I stayed there for a while, talking about how we would find the elusive phoenix who seemed to be more myth than reality. We realized we’d have to enlist the help of Kai and Gideon, and Killian suggested even Jude, his ornery Beta, if we wanted any hope in finding him. I agreed to meet with them tomorrow to discuss more about our next steps.

He was leaving the penthouse when he passed Michael. The angel entered the penthouse, exchanging pleasantries with Tristan and then making his way toward me. His eyes went to my bandaged hand and then to my face, and his expression fell.

“What happened?” he said, almost disappointed.

Tristan came up behind him and quickly explained what happened. Everyone sat down around the dining table as he went on to explain what Oksana’s hypothesis was, Michael listening intently and nodding. He occasionally looked my way, but his focus was on Tristan. I just kept eating my pancakes, not wanting to stress about my hand and the knowledge that it probably wouldn’t be the only time Lucifer attacked me that way.

Michael rubbed his lower lip as Tristan finished talking. “He’s not attacking head-on,” he said pensively.

“This isn’t considered head-on?” Maverick scoffed, taken aback.

Michael shook his head. “He would have come for her if he was. He’s toying with you. I wonder why …”

“Maybe he doesn’t need her right now?” Echo suggested. “But because he’s a guy, he can’t just let her off the hook that easily, either.” She rolled her eyes.

“Why wouldn’t he need me? He said he still did … even though he said he was going to give me a break for a while.”

“Camila,” Michael straightened. “did you say he ripped out your heart?”

I nodded.

“Damnit!” Michael slammed a hand on the dining table, making it rattle. I jumped, alarmed by his ferocity.

“Can angels curse?” Maverick mumbled to Echo. She smacked him on the arm.

Michael ran a hand through his hair. “He has a piece of you, which means he can experiment with it any time he likes. Who knows what he’ll do? Whether it’s to build his weapon or to bind you, the possibilities are endless.”

I pushed my empty plate to the side and bumped my forehead on the table.
