On more than one occasion I consoled myself with words along these lines: Sure, the romance that I thought would last forever has vanished, but still I’m lucky to have my job. Then I learned that the management of WNYC was planning to solve a station-wide financial crisis by canceling The Next Big Thing, and that they weren’t going to tell us about it until weeks before it was to happen. Even though the show was a success, in a moment of panic selling, the president, when told by the board that she had no wiggle room to balance the upcoming year’s budget, decided the most expedient solution was to jettison us. With my Newsweek knowledge of The Art of War, I understood that if I was going to save the show, I would have to think like my opponent. However, my orientation, nurtured as it is by crosswords, is still informed by a somewhat unfashionable notion of fairness, and so I was at a loss. Although we were not part of the problem, we were part of the solution.

Any remaining feelings of devastation over the loss of my romantic relationship were neatly swept aside by this news, which suddenly concentrated my mind on one thing only: save the show. I entered into warrior mode, and the puzzle reentered my daily routine as a key component of my training.
