Mae Waddell had composed herself and waited for me at the kitchen table, sitting across from PO Bobby John Crockett. She still showed signs of having cried. Her mascara was a little messed up, but as I approached, she smiled at something Bobby said.
Mae is somewhere over fifty. I never asked how far and never ran her name through the driverâs license files to get a year of birth. Sheâs blonde, wealthy, can ride a horse as well as a Comanche warrior, and is drop dead gorgeous. I had no doubt Bobby was trying to make time with her, and Mae was flirting right back.
âMind if I interrupt?â I said.
Mae looked up at me. âSammy, do you know this young man looks like he could be your son?â
âSo people tell me. But I was nowhere near Blount County thirty-three years ago.â
âLandâs sake, Sammy.â Mae feigned a mild case of shock.
Bobby added, âLooks like time for me ta go. See ya, boss.â Then he turned on a 500 watt smile. âBye, Mae.â
âYou be careful out there, Bobby John.â She returned the smileâalso high wattage.
I sat in the chair Bobby had used, ready to talk business.
âTell me about Rosanna Perry.â
She waited a long moment to respond. Her eyes clouded, she sniffed and as a tear rolled down the outside of her right cheek, she blotted it with a tissue.
âSammy, darlinâ Iâve known her for almost ten years.â
âI saw her business cards in the other room. She work for you that long?â
âShe did. Rosanna was a very good salesperson.â
I shifted in my chair. My lower back ached from the dampness, and I couldnât get comfortable.
âWhat brought you here today,â I asked.
âWhen Rosanna didnât show up in the office this morninâ and didnât answer my calls, I got worried. That was unlike her.â
âHow did you get into the house?â
âThe front door was unlocked.â
I frowned. âAnd you just walked in?â My tone implied I didnât think she did the right thing.
Mae lowered her eyes and looked embarrassed. âUh-huh.â She sounded like a little girl caught misbehaving.
âYou should have called 9-1-1 or me first rather than walking into a potentially dangerous situation.â
âThatâs what Bobby John said.â
I stared at her and thought that if she arrived a bit earlier we might have had two new bodies.
âRosanna ever married?â
âDivorced twice.â
âAny recent love interests?â
She paused. âMore than one, but I donât know if love entered the picture.â
âHow many?â
âRosanna was, uh...fond of men.â
âWhat does that mean?â My patience was not limitless.
Mae looked into my eyes and blinked a few times.
âSammy, letâs just say Kate is lucky Rosanna didnât set her sights on you.â
âWould you say she was promiscuous?â
âI would say, sugar, she was romantically active.â
âWith both single and married men?â
âI didnât keep score.â
âMae, your friend was stoned to death. A message the killer left implies she was adulterous. This is no time to protect her reputation. And itâs possible a man with whom she was having an affair may be the next victim.â
âI understand.â
âDid she talk about her liaisons?â
âNothing and no one specific.
