CHAPTER 25

When Julia came into the Sky High office late that afternoon, the first words out of her mouth included one of my favorite questions of all time.

“Want to hear some juicy gossip?” she asked.

I nodded eagerly. “Who, what, where, when and how?”

“Tina Carmichael,” she replied. “I forgot to buy peanut butter for the kids’ lunches, so I ran to Food Town around eight last night. Tina and her boyfriend were in the produce section debating which kind of lettuce they were going to have in their salad.”

“Is she still dating the guy from Rocky Mountain Insurance?” I asked.

Julia smirked. “Keep up, Katie! That was Toby. And it was last year. She’s been through two other guys since then. This one is a good-looking CPA named Alex.”

“Well, good for Tina,” I said. “What about the scoop?”

“Yeah, okay,” Julia said. “So Tina told me that Lenny Holland opened a checking account the day that he died with, like, two thousand dollars in cash.”

“How did she hear about that?”

Julia shrugged. “I didn’t ask. Alex had gone in search of salad dressing, so we only had a few seconds to chitchat. But she said it was highly unusual because Lenny was known for always being broke.”

“I’d heard that,” I said. “Broke, late paying his bills, always borrowing from friends.”

“But then he waltzed into Crescent Creek Bank with a backpack filled with tens and twenties.”

“And it was a total of how much?”

“Two thousand,” Julia said. “But here’s the best part—most of it was counterfeit. The bank didn’t find out until after Lenny had been murdered.”

“That is pretty good gossip,” I said. “Although I’d heard about that from Dina.”

“And you didn’t tell me?” Julia said.

“I couldn’t,” I said. “It was related to the ongoing investigation, so…you know how that goes.”

“Of course,” she said.

“So what else did Tina tell you?”

“She likes my new haircut,” Julia said.

“I mean about Lenny.”

She giggled. “I know. I was just messing with you.”

“Do you know how she heard that the cash was bogus?”

“I have a hunch it was her boyfriend,” Julia answered. “When he came back with the dressing, he asked Tina what we were talking about. She got all flustered and changed the subject, so that made me think that he’s the one who told her but he asked her not to tell anyone else.”

“That’s probably a good guess,” I said. “I love Tina, but she can’t keep a secret to save her life.”

“Is that so awful?” Julia smiled. “I mean, it doesn’t make her a bad person or anything.”

“I know, but she’s forever doing that; promising to be judicious and then spilling the beans five seconds later.”

“But that’s how I get the best scoops,” she said. “I count on Tina to keep me updated on everything that she hears about working at the nail salon.”

“It’s just good that she doesn’t work in health care or law enforcement,” I said. “That would make it even more of a dicey proposition. There are laws and confidentiality agreements that she’d have to worry about.
