“That little twit! Who does he think he is?” Bernice yelled as she stomped around the bedroom. “He looks like he’s twelve years old and he’s going to tell me I’m crazy? I should’ve just smacked him!”
“He didn’t say you were crazy. He said you’re getting older. He probably talks like that to all the old people.” Ken edged toward the door. Saying “old” had been a mistake.
Bernice came at him like a heat-seeking missile, arms pin wheeling and one finger pointing. At least it was the index finger. Judging by the color of her face, her blood pressure medicine was failing to keep pace with her rant. “Old? I can still get pantyhose on without any help. I don’t wear raggedy old granny panties. And colored bras—who do you know who has more colored bras than I do, I’d like to know? Old women wear white underwear.” Bernice went on. “I work at the hospital as a Pink Lady. Do you think they let crazy people do that? They don’t think I’m old!”
Ken saw a way out of the conversation. “Bernice, it’s almost time for your shift. Shouldn’t you be getting all pinked up?”

“Okay, all you people out of the room. John is acting like a big crab ass and needs some Pink Time. Come back in an hour or so. He’ll either be in a better mood or I’ll have used the Big Pillow and put him out of my misery,” Bernice said as she shooed them to the door. The relatives all filed out of the hospital room in slow motion. “Out, out, out. Go sit in the garden and smell the flowers or something.”
John said, “You sure are bossy today, Bernice. What’s got you in a mood?”
“Ah the doctor talked to me like I was a geezer. Little snot. Said I should take up a project, try something new or do something I used to enjoy. I think he meant knitting or quilting, bor-ing! But today, you’re my project. Those people came to visit you and you’re sitting there like a lump.” Bernice sat in the visitor’s chair and faced John. “What’s the deal?”
“It’s my daughter, Lizzie,” John said. “You haven’t met her. Her husband won’t let her come to visit. He says he needs her to be with the kids and he doesn’t want her upset, seeing me in hospice. I’d think it would upset her more not to be able to say good-bye.”
“Doesn’t she have any gumption? Girls nowadays. Hmph.”
“She won’t cross him. He’s got a tight hand on the checkbook. He has a mistress and maybe a girlfriend besides. I had a detective check him out. I don’t think Lizzie knows. I’m not sure if the mistress knows about the girlfriend but somebody else can tell her.”
“Well then. What would you like to happen?” Bernice asked. “I have friends in low places, you know.”
“I wish he’d just go up in a puff of smoke. Barring that, I guess Lizzie could bring the kids and move back home with Edith, although I’m not sure how that would work out.
