“So? How was it?” Z asked Rueben as he stepped into Buzz-Z’s computer lab. He’d thought that Buzz-A’s mansion lab had been impressive but this one…it was quadruple the size. And instead of monitors, there were holographic screens everywhere.

Rueben finished toweling his hair dry. “That bath was like heaven.” He was wearing his futuristic pants and jacket, which Rosa had somehow washed and dried while he’d been in the bathhouse. He wiped a trickle of water off his forehead. “All those water jets. And the complimentary massage…”

Z nodded knowingly. “I see Buzz treated you to the VIP treatment.”

Rueben fluffed his jacket collar. “That and then some.”

“That means he trusts us. That’s good. Now, your bath ‘massage’… Did you prefer Binnie’s or Biddie’s hands?”

Blushing, Rueben gave Z a sideways glance. Aki was already in the room. “I’ll tell you as long as you don’t tell Aki when we get back.”

Z snickered. “I won’t as long as you don't tell my babe.”

“Deal.” He leaned in and whispered to Z.

“Good choice.” Z straightened and quickly showed Rueben around Buzz’s computer lab. He stopped behind Aki’s workstation and peered over her shoulders. “What do we have?”

She turned and regarded Z interestedly. “Buzz’s computers have been searching for patterns and anomalies. We’ve got something.”

Young Z strode into the room and didn’t like how close Z was standing next to Aki. Z acted like he didn’t care, and Young Z approached and peered over Aki-Z’s other shoulder at the holographic computer screen.

“What is it, babe?” Young Z said.

Aki-Z glanced up at him. “That arms dealer you found in the street with his hand cut off. Buzz’s AI traced a money payment to him from a dead-end Caymans account.”

Criminals always had ways of hiding their money. Some things stay the same in all the worlds, Rueben mused.

“I was able to trace it back to a Valence Systems Corp.”

Z’s eyes narrowed. “What kind of company is that?”

“Computer parts manufacturer. Well, that’s what they started as. These days they work intensively with state-of-the-art robotic sentries. That’s not the most interesting thing about them. They’re owned by several parent companies, with Nunez Corp. at the top.”

“Doesn’t ring a bell,” Young Z said.

Z, meanwhile, thumbed his lip. “Nunez…for some reason, that name rings a bell. Can you search for him?”

“Sure,” Aki-Z said. “I can’t find anything out about Nunez Corp. aside from they’re in the scientific applications field. Probably tied with the government.”

Aki-Z clacked at the keyboard. “Here’s a news article on a Dr. Eduardo Nunez. It’s over twenty years old, though. ‘Dr. Nunez was involved in theoretical physics for much of his professional career. There has still been no trace of Nunez after he disappeared during the testing of an experimental black hole device that shut down shortly after—’” Aki-Z stopped short. “Wait, I think I remember this guy from back in my CIA days. If memory serves, he was into time travel.”

Rueben nodded. “Same on my Earth. There was something about how he managed to transport a banana back in time or something.
