Chapter Twenty Three

It had been four days since we returned from our quick trip to San Antonio, and literally everything and nothing had changed. My world had been flipped upside down, but the days still continued on as if everything was still normal because for everyone else, it was. I went to Joe’s in the mornings before work, chatted about books, and fielded questions from Ruby about my trip with Kaden. She wanted all the details, but like, how was I supposed to explain it? It probably looked crazy to her, for a completely different reason than why it actually was crazy.

I knew that if she hadn’t had Ali distracting her, the interrogation would have been much, much worse. He was effectively keeping her occupied lately, and the timing of it was almost too perfect but I wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

There were small differences in life, I supposed. They were subtle, and I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but they were there. I was remembering things a little better since meeting the seer, and my exhaustion seemed to be slightly less. I was still in pain, but it was still more progress than I’d ever seen in my illness. Whatever the illness was. Maybe the break in the routine, the distractions from everyday life, were enough to make me less affected. I didn’t know, but I was fine to just go with it for the time being.

Perhaps the biggest difference was that Kaden had been staying on my couch, which was weird. He had his own place, and from what I could tell, he wasn’t hurting for money. Quite the opposite, actually.

“Excuse me?” an elderly man caught my attention, breaking my daydreams and chronic overthinking. I rose from the counter I had been leaning on, staring out into space. I pasted a “Hi, this is my friendly customer service face smile” on and addressed him.

“Yes, sir, how can I help you?”

“Yeah, I’m looking for a book about Siamese cats. My daughter thinks I need company and has insisted I get a pet. I don’t know nothing about no cats though.” I tried to hold back the chuckle that was threatening to make an appearance.

“Sure, no problem. I can show you right where you can find some good resources.”

It was on my way back from helping him as I ran my fingers along the spines of books, that one caught my attention. The Phoenix by Anna Whitt. And it seemed like too much of a coincidence that I’d never noticed it before now. I was certain I’d seen every single book in this shop.

I ran my fingers along the top of the spine of the book before tilting it forward slightly. I hesitated, a pit in my belly. How could I not pick it up, though? The seer’s words replayed in my head.

Control of the phoenix cannot be tamed, for what is meant to be will always find a way, and those who seek to cow the volley will meet their end in fiery flame.
