The police chief parked outside the jail, and we got out of the car and waited by a door. “He should be here any second,” the police chief told me. “He’s a great detective. I don’t want to lose him.”

I didn’t want to lose him, either. Even if John never returned to jail and even if I could prove his innocence, the threat of the coven remained in the back of my mind.

“Cheer up, girl. Your man is about to take you in his arms,” the police chief told me.

“If I didn’t know better, I would say you’re a romantic.”

He nodded. “Big Nora Roberts fan. Huge.”

The door opened, and John walked out. He looked tired, but when he spotted me, he smiled wide. He sped up and practically ran to me. Taking me in his arms, he spun me around and kissed me hard.

I closed my eyes and kissed him back. Our tongues touched, and I got dizzy, which I was sure was due to the kiss and not being spun around. Finally, he put me down, but he continued to kiss me, feasting on my mouth. We might have stayed there outside the jail kissing forever if the police chief didn’t interrupt us.

“Ahem,” he said. “Sorry about this, but I still have work to do. We just had a murder, you know.”

“I’m ready to work, Chief,” John said.

“Nope. You’re still on suspension until you’re cleared. I’m taking you home.”
