Wednesday night at the rodeo

Excitement, fear, manly bravado, sexual tension and childish joy filled the arena with so much emotion Ash wished he could adjust the volume on the sensations battering him.

At the same time, he opened all his senses and welcomed the assault. He was feeling everything.

So much better than feeling nothing.

He glanced at Erin in her soft, pretty dress. She was perfect no matter the clothing she wore, but her confidence was soaring. Her yellow aura shined with joy within a thin glittered red outline. She glanced his way, met his stare. Suddenly, he felt like a lake she wanted to drink dry. The red in her aura confirmed passion distracted her from the simple pleasures of a night out. Din spun a whitish, opaque magic to protect them. Ash wondered if Din kept Erin within a magical shell every chance he got.

As soon as a young girl bearing the American Flag raced out of the open hallway leading to the livestock barn Ash stood and took off his cowboy hat. Sound echoed from the metal roof through the stand. Fifty other riders bearing state flags burst out in columns of two. One line went left and the other right, until there were two rings of riders, flags billowing, horse hooves pounding and patriotic cheer moving through the crowd. After several minutes of the thunder of hoofbeats and the applause of a hundred people, the National Anthem started over the loudspeakers. All through the pavilion, the audience stood and removed their cowboy and ball caps in one smooth movement. Hand over his chest, Ash’s heart beat red, white and blue. There was nothing like a crowd of people who lived close to the earth to create grounded emotions. Their enjoyment of the spoils of farming and ranching was contagious.

Dust rose from the floor as the horses and riders thundered out of the arena. Ash glanced over to see Erin smiling, clapping, her aura pink with calm shining through the yellow glitter of joy sprinkled throughout. Being so close to her sweet glow warmed and relaxed him. Next to her, Din waved his cowboy hat over his head, reminiscent of a cavalry rider preparing for a charge. On Din’s other side, Red and his social worker, Charlie, sat back down on the bleachers and leaned into each other as they talked over the noise. The announcer, a local fellow Ash would guess based on the crowd reaction, began paying homage to the businesses who were supporting the night’s entertainment, and everyone began to take their seats. Red stood and leaned in to talk to Din and Erin, before he moved past them to Ash seated at the end of the aisle.

“Want anything from the food venders?” Red asked.

Ash smiled at the idea of food created with little more than lard and sugar. “Fried funnel cake with extra sugar.”

“Soda?”

“Sure.” Ash tugged a wad of cash from his pocket and pressed it into Red’s hand. “You bought the tickets, let me get the snacks.
