“For he’s a jolly good fellow, which nobody can deny.” Tim’s group sang off key but he was pleased by their welcome.

“Here, Cap. Sit.” Richmond pulled out his chair.

“Thanks, guys and Keiko. But you don’t have to baby me.”

They all joined him at the table. Keiko held up the plate. “All your favorite kinds.” Glazed donuts in varied shapes and sizes sat on the dish. He took a twist. When they got theirs, Tim focused on Abe in between bites of the sugary treat.

“These guys behaving themselves?”

“Yeah, they’ve been great. A little pokey on the chores, but things get done.”

Tim knew that wasn’t true. They joked around and once in a while pulled some pranks but all three of his crew did their tasks efficiently. “Yeah, I have to crack the whip.”

“Ha!” This from Spike. He gestured to the sling. “How much longer you gotta wear that?”

“I hope not much longer. I’ll build up my hours gradually until I’m healed and get my strength back.”

“Good.”

Abe said, “I’ve been working off the big table in your office, so your desk is all yours.”

“We should meet now and decide what I’m going to do. I know I can take over the scheduling.”

“I’m glad to hear that.” The captain was responsible for the schedule of all shifts in the house. “I hate doing it.”

“It gets better with time.”

They walked through the common room and to his office. Tim even enjoyed the scents of the firehouse: a bit of smoke tinged the air along with food cooked for breakfast. Bacon, he noted. Inside his domain, the desks were tidied up, anything extra put away in filing cabinets that lined the wall and chairs empty of magazines and other paper stuff. Once they were seated, Tim swiveled his chair around to face Abe. “Anything you want to discuss, Abe?”

“You won’t be coming on calls right away, will you?”

His eyebrows rose. “Of course not.”

“Some guys, when they’re hurt, start off as observers at the scene but don’t go in.”

“Huh. Sounds dangerous. To the officer and his crew. All it would take is someone running into me…” He shuddered. “If I wrench my shoulder and make it worse, Ava will kill me.”

“I agree fully with you waiting to do that.”

Just then the PA crackled. “Fire on North and Main Streets. Truck 2 and Engine 2 go into service.”

Abe bolted up.

Tim said, “Good luck.” But he felt a clutch in his heart. All firefighters rued missing fires.

When Abe left, Tim called up next month’s schedule. The challenge energized him. He had a system that he employed for the time consuming task. Working off of last month’s assignments saved hours of time. He’d just finished when a ping sounded on his phone. Ava texted him from the car that she was here.

Damn, he wanted to see the crew when they got back. A two-hour fire must have been crazy. He sent his wife a message he’d be right out. He was in the bay when the rig drove in.
