Chapter Eleven

As I strode around the neighborhood, I thought about Grayson and me. I remembered being just as awkward around him before we started dating—maybe even more so. My previous dating experiences had never gone very well, and I’d been in a horrible cycle of ghastly blind dates before Grayson moved to the neighborhood. Even after he moved in, it took a long while for anything to really develop between us. Now, it was hard to imagine a day without Grayson in it.

I knew we were both very different from each other in a lot of ways. Opposites do tend to attract. In a lot of ways, it’s probably good for me to push myself a little bit—to meet new people, do new things, and go to new places with Grayson. The only problem is trying to mesh our two different personalities into a relationship that works. I decided I’d give him a call later on and see if we could plan a time when I could properly meet his friends, since I’d bowed out from going with him to the dinner one of them was hosting. I’d briefly met one or two of them when we were out, but it wasn’t as if I’d really spent time talking to them. I figured it might be a little easier for me if meeting them was on my home turf and I was the one hosting.

Once I got back home, I decided to do a little yard work since I was sweaty from my walk anyway. Maybe Flora inspired me to tackle some of my front yard. Weeding wasn’t my favorite thing in the world, but I realized if I did a little bit every week then it didn’t get out of control. Jonas’s yard was definitely a warning about what could happen when things got out of control. So I yanked the dandelions, clover, and chickweed up with impunity into a pile and then tossed them in my compost bin as Fitz watched me with interest from a sunny spot on the windowsill.

Then I went inside, loved on the cat for a few minutes, and headed to the shower to get cleaned up. After that, it was my favorite time of day—curling up with my book on the sofa with Fitz and a cup of chai tea next to me. The little bit of exercise followed by the comfort of a good book and good company helped me completely relax.

I couldn’t spend all day doing that, though, unfortunately, although I certainly gave it a go. After a couple of hours, I gingerly moved off the sofa as Fitz gave me a slightly indignant look. “Sorry, buddy,” I said. “Laundry is calling.”

Not just laundry, but plenty of other routine household tasks. Then I realized I had an errand to run if I wanted to make sure I had lunches to pack to take to work for the next few days. I carefully made a list before I went because I’d discovered how dangerous wandering aimlessly around a grocery store was for me.
