What happened next was instinctive. I cut in front of Max, who was sending sparks of magic into the field of zombies, and gripped Cole’s shoulder. He knew what to do without me saying a word. For some reason, our magic played off one another. I could amplify his powers — as could Raven and Naida — and I used that to our advantage now.

“Down!” Cole ordered our comrades. Everyone dropped as Cole unleashed a barrage of fire in the direction of the shambling zombies. The entire lot of them caught fire, and while their forward momentum didn’t cease, they were no longer moving in tandem.

“Retreat,” Max ordered, pointing in the direction we’d come from.

I opened my mouth to argue — we had the Gorgon on the ropes, for crying out loud — but when I checked where she’d been standing only moments before it was empty. “Where ... ?”

“She poofed the second the zombies appeared,” Naida said, kicking out to keep a flaming zombie from putting his hands on her. “It’s a game, Poet. She wanted to see us in action. She doesn’t care that we decimated her army. She only cares that she got to ascertain our powers. And now she knows better for the next attack.”

I’d deduced that myself. “She didn’t see all of our powers in action,” I argued as Kade started wrestling with me in an effort to drag me away from the carnage. “She didn’t see everything.”

“No, but she saw our best weapon,” Max noted, his expression grim. “Stop fighting, Poet.” He used his dominant voice, the one he utilized when he caught me picking his pocket in Detroit all those years ago and offered me a job. “She knows that Cole is a threat, and will act accordingly the next time. We must regroup.”

“But ... .” I felt helpless as I allowed Kade to drag me with him. “She’s still here. Somewhere.”

“She is, but she won’t allow herself to be taken this evening.” Max was stern. “We shouldn’t have offered her a deal. We should’ve attacked and been done with it. We’ll know better next time.”

That felt like a pointed jab. “I thought that she would take the deal. Nobody wants to die.”

“She’s beyond believing she’s vulnerable. She has faith she’s survived for a reason, that she has power nobody else has. She’s ... a lost cause.”

Weariness suddenly overtook me and I fell in line with the others. “What should we do?”

“Get off this island,” Max replied. “After that, we’ll figure it out.”

And just like that, he shut down the conversation. We made the trip back to the boat in silence. Nellie didn’t even bother waking a sleeping Dane. He was dead to the world and it didn’t matter.

“We should check for cameras,” Cole advised before we left the harbor. “We don’t want to be caught on video when Torrance comes out here tomorrow.”

“Good idea.” I studied the light posts positioned around the property. “There and there.”

Naida nodded, pooling her magic to create a lightning storm of epic proportions.
