The four of them land in a heap under the trapdoor, with it slamming shut before Frankie has time to call out to the others. Even with this brief window of light, Frankie knows they’re not alone.

She isn’t concerned about the man in the room attacking them. He’s way past caring. This is the fourth body so far, putting them way above what she’s been expecting by around, well four.

“Mom, are we okay? Please tell me we’re okay, because this place doesn’t smell okay.”

“Were okay, Dex. The man can’t hurt us.”

Frankie’s answered him before pondering the question to any great degree. Better not to have the small dog bouncing off the walls in an effort to escape. It’s then she hears squeaking from behind her. “Stinky, are you alright?”

Manic squeaking is followed by an equally squeaky “No”.

“Okay, it’s time to play find the hamster.”

“That’s not something I ever thought I’d hear you say,” says Zane, spluttering with laughter.

Frankie ignores him, instead groping around in the dark in search of Sophie’s familiar. She can hear the Nautilus is doing likewise even if he’s giving into the occasional chortle. Frankie’s finally rewarded when she grabs a handful of wiry fur. “You’re safe now.”

Frankie stuffs the small rodent down the front of her top, Sophie-style. Immediately the small animal relaxes. It’s something Frankie is able to detect by its heartbeat slowing. Eventually it turns around and pokes its head out of her top. Shame there’s nothing for it to see.

Frankie holds her wand over her head and says “Illuminate!” like she really means it. Nothing happens. “Blast, it looks as this is another no-go area on the magic front.”

Thank goodness experience has them all packing headlamps. They haven’t had time to get these from their backpacks when the trapdoor opens again. This time it doesn’t close, with a sun lounger being jammed in the gap to stop this from happening.

The first person Frankie sees peering through the opening is a grinning Dominik. “Can anyone join the party?”

He really does think this is a boy’s own adventure. Sure Frankie likes a bit of mayhem as much as the next witch. However, Dominik’s glee is at a whole different level. He jumps into the space, landing softly on his feet and close enough to Frankie that she knows it’s been no accident. He’s soon joined by the others, with Sophie transporting herself and Nana Peg into the space magically.

This has Frankie realizing that with the trapdoor open she might be able to perform magic down here after all. Unlike the Wereall caving system where all magical powers are suspended, the same doesn’t appear to be true in this space. At least so long as the trapdoor is open.

The first thing she needs to do is get rid of the body. Already the heat and the humidity of the island are seeping into the space, warming it up.

A glimpse before she sends him on his way shows he was a bartender at the resort. The badge on his tropical shirt proclaiming that in life he’d answered to Manuel, Mixologist.
