Chapter 13

“Now, pull the line through the guides and to the bottom, toward the spool. I’m going to pull a lot of it through here, so if you don’t do this part now, it could take a while. It’s easier to do it this way, too,” Charles explained, demonstrating to the kids.

“The line is pulled down, and we’re ready to move on. This type of reel is a spinning reel. You pull up on this piece of metal, called the bail, and then make sure your line is pulled out and ready,” Charles said, his shaky hands moving the fishing rod around to let all the kids see. “This plastic piece on top is the spool release, but we won’t need to touch it for this. So, take your line from the guides, wrap it around the spool, and tie a tight arbor knot. It’s easiest to keep the line tight rather than have a bunch of slack.”

He demonstrated and looked among the kids as he tied the knot, as if he’d done it a thousand times before, then pulled it tight.

“I’ll show you how to tie the knots on one of these benches. It’s easier to show it there and not around a spool. But here’s the fun part. We close the bail, set the spool of line on the ground—with the label side up—pinch the line, and slowly crank the reel,” Charles said. He groaned as he reached his feet and pointed to the spool of line. Brent set it on the ground, label side up, before Charles could ask.

“Thank you. If we don’t keep the label side up, the line might twist, which won’t be good. Does anyone have a guess on why I’m pinching the line when I reel it in?” Charles asked.

Chloe felt like she was learning something new, even though her dad had taught her how to do this long ago. Charles, much older than her dad had been when he passed away, had a lot more experience under his belt, and it showed. The shakiness of his hands didn’t hinder his ability to move quickly through the steps or handle the line. Better yet, each kid stood there politely and followed his every move.

“To keep it tight?” Rachel blurted out. Her twin and nearly silent brother, Carson, gave her stink eye, almost as if he wanted to say the answer, too.

Charles smiled. “That is correct. The last thing we want to do is get anything wrapped up. That would cause issues later, and if you’re trying to do something, you might as well do your best to do it right,” he said. He spun the reel, keeping the line pinned against the rod and his finger, and kept a close eye on the spool.

The line worked its way up and down the spool, wrapping around it nicely. He spun it for another thirty seconds and slowly stopped, sighing.

“Usually, kids, I would pack the spool full of the line because of how
