Diehl. To that end, the couple kept the porch’s transom leaded-glass windows while replicating only those below, so they are the right dimensions for the new porch design.

Original leaded-glass windows that also often leaked were repaired by a local company. They also added insulation to the attic. Throughout the process they asked questions of John Waters, preservation programs manager at the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy in Chicago.

Thankfully, the previous owner, who lived there for thirty years, had already done a lot of restoration work. Linda McQuillen was also the owner when it was revealed by a Wright historian in 2015 that this is an American System-Built Home—one of the prototypes, in fact.

Mary Jane Hamilton reportedly documented her findings about the home over a twenty-year period, conferring with Mike Lilek, who also led the documentation of the Elizabeth Murphy House in Shorewood, and serves as curator of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block in Milwaukee. Connecting with the twenty owners of Wright’s other American System-Built Homes—of which only twenty-five were completed, despite more than 900 drawings—has been a huge help. “People who own ASB Homes have a lot of similar issues,” Diehl says, “so seeing people delve into their discoveries and mysteries is helpful.”

“It’s a very solidly built house. All of the improvements we’re making are not very structural, porch aside. Hopefully this will last beyond the time we are here,” says Diehl.
