EIGHTEEN
âWhen sanity fails,
nothing is boring.â
âCaine Deathwalker
Our hands touched. A flutter went through my gut. Gravity gave up some of its force. Inertia, too, was a weak force now. I felt much lighter on my feet. Every part of the bedroom was a shade of gray even the people, but their auras were visible: thin wispy envelope around their charcoal bodies. Graceâs aura was a bright orange. Mine was a murky antique gold.
The doctorsâbright gold and blue aura around themâstared, eyes wide, searching.
I looked at Colt. His gaze panning the area too. Grace and I had shifted over to the ghost world. None of those left behind could see us anymore.
I turned my attention to the bed. Selene wore a crimson aura as I expected, but she shimmered dimly as if in danger of being blown out. Annaâs aura was a pulsing tangle of clashing colors: red, orange, teal, lime, violet, and purple. Pink flecks floated in her aura. When they collided, black stars were born before they imploded, vanishing to gray after-images.
Grace stared at the fey queen. âNow thatâs freaky.â She still held my hand. Her gaze slid to me. Ready to solo?â
Colt distracted me by waving his hand through my incorporeal body. It was strange to have his hand go through me like I was a ghost, and to only feel a light tingling. I understood his questing fingers. From his perceptive, Grace and I had simple disappeared from the room, though being a demigod, he might still vaguely sense my presence.
Grace bobbed our joined hands to get my attention. âAll right, Iâm letting go. If you fade back to the living world, Iâll go back and get you, and weâll try again.â
âOkay.â
Her hand was underneath mine. Our palms slid against each other, then just our fingers touched. Our hands separated. She stayed the same, a charcoal ghost edged with orange light.
I used the force of my divine will, focusing on going nowhere. It seemed for a moment, a tingle went through my body which felt a bit heavier, then the extra weight went away. I saw streaks of flesh-tone color in my hand, then the tones returned to gray. I was doing it; holding myself in the ghost world by force of will.
âYouâre doing it!â Grace sounded excited and surprised.
âI am a demon lord turned god,â I said. âWith practice, Iâll be able to access this world without help.â
âWell, thatâs cutting into my gig, but I guess I donât mind.â
âYouâd better go while you can,â I said. âWhen I start mucking with the entity, a shit-storm will go off.â
âIâm gone.â She waved and her orange aura flickered out. Those in the room reacted like they could see her.
And now Iâm alone. Letâs just see what I can do.
I hopped onto the edge of the bed. The lower gravity made my movements slower and I landed with little transfer of force. The mattress sank under my feet and took its time lifting me back up again.
I stepped between Seleneâs legs and stared down at her: perfection sheathed in crimson silk.
