When I woke up, my bed was unnaturally warm and my foot was unnaturally . . . squishy and wet?
My eyes didnât want to open all the way, and my body didnât want to move very much, so I wiggled my foot out from under the covers and squinted at it, my face still half buried in my pillow.
It was blue. Blue and kinda shimmery and jiggly. Like jelly. Like a big, blue jelly dessert. I bet it would taste like fake raspberries. My mouth watered. But I didnât have the energy to bring my foot any closer to my face, so instead I rolled over. I could just go back to sleep and dream about eating blue-raspberry jelly. That sounded better.
My knee touched something hard and warm as I repositioned myself. Something hard and warm and moving. A person? A person in my bed.
Okay, cool. They felt comfy. I inched my way closer to the heat source and reached my arm around, snuggling myself up against . . . Oh, that felt like muscle. Smooth, hard, hot, just the tiniest bit damp with sweat. There was a man in my bed.
Maybe that meant I was dreaming. There hadnât been a man in my bed since . . . well, since my politician vampire charge had brainwashed me into loving himâand I didnât want to think about that now.
But even so, I was quickly remembering everything Iâd been missing. Dream or not, I didnât care. It didnât take too much energy to slide my hand over his chest and what felt like insanely defined abs. Yeah, this must be a dream. He smelled too good to be real. Like a damn forest, with a little bit of gun oil mixed in.
He was moving more now, his arms reaching behind his back and finding me. In one smooth motion, he rolled over and hooked his hand behind my neck, pulling my face so close to his, so fast, that my eyes didnât have a chance to open and my brain didnât have a chance to process anything besides his hot breath on my cheek, and then his lips brushing mine.
And then I was kissing his jaw, drawn by the deliciously rough stubble around his lips and the taste of salt on his neck.
When my eyes fluttered open just a tiny bit, I saw more of the blue jelly. Right under his ear.
Mmm, good dream, I thought. Sex and candy at the same time.
I took a bite of the jelly, and it did not taste like raspberries. Rotten raspberries, maybe. With emphasis on the rot.
The door burst open then, and someone was shouting, and bright lights blinded me.
âNo, no, no!â a woman screeched, whacking me with a throw pillow in time with her words. âThat is not for eating!â
She didnât have to tell me twice. I spat out the chunk of rotten jelly in my mouth, then gagged as I curled up in a ball, bringing my arms in front of me to defend against the pillow.
