FLEA MARKET TIPS

Arrive early in the morning for the best selection and head to the spot farthest away from the entrance first, since almost everyone will start browsing at the front. There will be more selection, though not necessarily the best bargains yet. That comes later in the afternoon, when dealers want less to pack up and will slash prices to make that happen.

Try to buy more than one item from any dealer. The more items you bundle together, the better the overall price you’re likely to get.

Don’t think you’ll get a better price by dissing the thing you want to buy. If the price isn’t low enough, you can point out chips or flaws, but do it nicely, like “I wish the hinge wasn’t broken so the door would close properly.” A little passive-aggressive behavior can work in these situations, but if you complain too much about it, the dealer will just think you shouldn’t buy it.

Ask questions about the item you like: Where did it come from? How old is it? Show interest to engage the seller so they’re more inclined to want to have the piece go home with you. They bought it in the first place because they thought it was “right” and will be pleased that you think so too.

Finally, keep a little package of wet wipes with you, since stuff is often dirty and your hands will get grimy from touching everything.
