Chapter Thirteen
Goldie drummed her fingers against the steering wheel as she wondered how to draw the attention of the police. Of course, it wasnât just any officer that she was interested in finding. It was a particular special agent. A man who was forever under foot when he wasnât wanted and never around when he was.
She tried to remember what she was doing at any point in the past when he suddenly appeared. Perhaps there was some sort of pattern to it? Try as she might, she couldnât fathom any. He was as likely to appear when she was in trouble as any other time it seemed.
Not that she was often in trouble. And whenever she was, she could usually point a finger at Zeb. Her actions of late were frequently a result of his insistence that her family could claim a rather shocking number of murderers.
He first suspected her of murdering a man named Jolly Jigs. Afterward he turned to her sister Nettie as the suspect. He was now equally convinced that Hap was a killer. The more she considered it, the more vexed she became.
A loud rapping on her window caused her to shriek. She scowled at the man standing next to her motor car at a stop sign as she lowered the window.
âYouâre blocking traffic,â Zeb said as he pointed behind her.
She glanced in the rearview mirror. âOh, bother. Itâs your fault.â
She pulled away without waiting for an answer. Too late, she remembered that she needed to speak with him. She abruptly turned the wheel to enter a lot next to a building. The sound of squealing tires was joined with the blaring of a horn. Zeb reached her car just as she climbed out.
âAre you crazy? You nearly caused an accident.â Anger burned in his eyes. âAnd how can you possibly blame any of that on me?â
âYouâre never about when I need you.â As soon as the words were out, Goldie realized they werenât entirely true. She wanted him now and he magically appeared.
Zeb opened his mouth to argue.
She interrupted him. âNever mind. I have something to tell you. It might be important.â
He closed his mouth as concern flooded his face. âDid something happen?â
âNot really.â She thought of her fright at the time. âDo you know anyone named Fearless Freddie Gower?â
Anger warred with his concern. âWhat did you do?â
âNothing!â
It didnât escape her that she sounded very much like her sister Nettie. Goldie took a deep breath allowing her own upset to drain.
In a much calmer voice, she started again. âHap is my brother. As you might expect, Iâm terribly fond of him.â
He began to say something then stopped abruptly as though changing his mind. When he did speak, his voice was also calm. âGo on.â
âThe night that Vestal died, I went to the Blackstone to meet Hap.â
âWhy?â
âI canât really tell you that.â She rushed to explain before his ire could be raised again. âItâs a family matter that deals with my father. It has nothing to do with Vestalâs death.
