After Edward gave Daisy the baby Tylenol, she drifted into a fitful sleep. He wasn’t sure how much longer he stayed up, trying to ignore the new hunter in Max’s house.

There was nothing wrong with Devon, per se, but after what Louise had told Edward, he wasn't in the mood to be around any of them. Devon awkwardly handed Daisy back to Edward, and made some joke about not knowing what to do with babies.

Edward couldn't even summon the energy to smile. Instead, he walked upstairs and spent the long evening holed up in his room.

Edward didn't know what time Max finally got home, though he heard the shower pop on briefly and Max's bedroom door close. The early morning light shone in his window, and he squeezed his eyes against it and fought to go back to sleep. Anything to get past that horrible knot in his stomach.

The tightness in his chest.

How could he have been so stupid? Of course the hunter felt sorry for him. Max was the type. On the surface, he looked like some badass, but underneath he was a big softy.

When Edward woke up, he was busy enough with Daisy and her needs to ignore the ache for a few minutes. Her fever broke, but her cheeks were still red and she was fussier than normal. He tried rocking her in the chair for about twenty minutes before Max knocked at the door.

"Breakfast is ready, if you're hungry," he said.

Ed held his breath. Daisy wiggled in his arms reacting to his mood. He kissed her three times on the forehead and bounced her gently. Then he rose, grabbed the spare phone and swung open the door.

Edward wanted to glare at the bastard, but he couldn't work up energy to look Max in the eye. So he marched downstairs and slumped at the kitchen table. He held on to Daisy like she was the one thing keeping him grounded. Keeping him from sinking deeper into the black pit that opened after the hunters attacked him.

In a way, she did.

Max didn't say anything as he served Ed fried eggs, toast, and bacon. Edward had picked out the bacon on the last trip to the grocery store because Max usually didn't have any, and he made a joke about Max probably not wanting to eat it due to his high cholesterol.

Max had rolled his eyes and picked out some turkey bacon instead, like he was proving Ed's point. Though, now, Max had the real thing on his plate.

It's not like Edward could complain. It wasn't his money.

He didn't have any money. Nor did he really have a right to complain about Max taking him in because he felt sorry for Ed. But he did have a right to complain about Max fucking around with him because of it.

Max didn't mention what happened the night before. Ed figured, from the silence, they hadn’t caught the guy. If he had, he imagined Max would be beaming and finding a way to delicately hand off Edward and Daisy to someone else.
