“Argh! Why does everybody lie?” An angry seven-year-old Rowan when his aunt Rosemary told his mother that she loved her new dress.

Late that afternoon, I left Simon to play with Dolly while I checked on Freddie Fox. I sat in front of his pen. “Hi, Freddie. How are you tonight?”

Head on paws, he stared up at me with his big sad eyes. Mama said humans were mean.

“Yes. Many humans are mean. Some of them aren’t, but you can’t tell who will be mean and who won’t, so you must stay away from them when you get released.”

What about the human who took my sister?

I reached out and scratched the top of his head. “I don’t know, baby. I’m sorry.”

You haven’t found her yet.

“No. I’m sorry.”

I’ve been eating my food.

“You have. I’m proud of you. You’re doing very well.”

You find my sister.

My chest squeezed. “I will try. I’ll see if anyone knows anything, and maybe we’ll find her nearby.”

He didn’t respond. Just laid there, head on paws, looking miserable. I worried that he’d give up if I didn’t find her. I went into the living room. “Gran, how would you go about finding a baby fox that was picked up from the roadside?”

Gran stopped her crocheting. “Do you know how long it’s been since it was picked up?”

“No. It couldn’t have been that long ago.”

“Do you know where it was picked up?”

“No. It has to have been near where I found Freddie, though. Their den wouldn’t have been too far away from there.”

She sat her hook and yarn on the side table. “This was Freddie’s relative?”

I nodded. “Yes. His littermate. A little female.”

“Hmm. A littermate. That means she’d share both parents, correct?”

“Yes.”

She nodded. “I can do some research. A finding spell might work, with modifications, if we can figure out which one to use, but there’s no guarantee. Also, they might have brought her in to see a vet. Call Dr. Winters and have him ask around. Also, invite him to dinner.”

That’s when I remembered. “Oh! I invited someone to dinner tonight!”

She sat up fast, dislodging the cat who’d been under her afghan. “What?”

I winced. “I’m sorry. I knew you were making chicken pot pie tonight, which smells great, by the way, and Monte wanted to come by and talk about his brother’s case.”

She breathed deeply through her nose, closing her eyes. “I’m fine. No need to panic.” She opened her eyes and studied me. “Who is Monty? Who is his brother? What time is he coming? And what case?”

“He’ll be here in,” I checked my watch, “ten minutes? Elias’s case. He’s Elias’s brother.”

“Alright. Fine. Set the table for four. Immediately. I’ll get one of the French silk pies out of the freezer so we’ll have dessert.” She walked toward the back door. “That’s why I make them ahead of time, after all. Because my grandchildren go inviting people over at the last minute and I don’t…” Her voice faded when she shut the back door.

I rushed into the
